Depends on what you are looking to harvest, more mulies than rabbits in this area.

I’d look at a wmu where permission is available more than worrying about trophy quality. If you can’t get permission….

Default No "Best" available

Every region has their super bucks in it, just some better than others. Are you just looking for quick tags (every 2-3 years) or willing to wait out the 6-8 years for a real premium area?
I would look at all the factors for what you personally call "best". If you're happy with a 160-170 type mule deer, I would say there is likely a few select deer in every zone. If you are looking for a real "gagger" you have to be willing to wait the necessary draw wait. Some great areas in the river areas in the 130's zones or 160's. The 150's have always produced decent to awesome deer. Guys that consistently take big deer every year, are guys that scout and hunt these areas relentlessly. Shed hunting, using trail cams, and basically getting out and burning boot leather will find some decent deer. As mentioned, access is critical.

Tried 208 a few years ago and wasn’t that impressed with the trophy quality to be honest with the long draw wait time and had some good permission along the river and hiked most of the days in the valley

The river valley between drumheller and trochu holds some big deer, smaller valleys like the ghost pine creek may have less competition for hunting spots and easier terrain to hike around in.

Pick somewhere close to home.

Jump in your pick up and go for a drive. Then start knocking on doors. Then put on your boots and do some hiking. People should not ever just volunteer up good hunting spots. If people ask my kids “where’d you get that buck?” They say “right behind the shoulder”

Jump in your truck and drive 10 hours south to knock on a door in an area you might never draw?

Thanks tips !

We hunted 102/118 for goats in 2020 and saw some decent mule deer, nothing super big, but a couple cool looking old mature deer.

I’ve heard Lethbridge west is producing some good bucks the last few years. I’m a P8 on MD and I’ll likely save up my priority now until the boy turns 12 in a couple years and let him use my tag down there somewhere.
I’m a 14 on goats so probably let him kill both at the same time.

It’s cool country down there, I like it !

Actually swapping permission for access for hunting is illegal in Alberta, but nothing illegal about giving permission, if there is no expectation/condition of receiving any kind of reward or compensation.

There's nothing illegal about hunting with your friends in Alberta if they are licensed resident hunters. It's irrelevant who buys gas, pays for the motel, lets their friends stay at their home or cabin for free, or supplies food, vehicles, etc.
As long as expenses, equipment, permission, etc., are offered, shared or given, the split of costs doesn't matter. It only becomes illegal when someone does it for financial gain.

It is legal as long as nobody accepts any kind of reward or compensation for providing access to private property for the purpose of hunting. Compensation does not have to be financial , it can be any kind of compensation, including access to other private property.

Odd, guys can exchange hunts on crown land but can’t on private land?

Ok, I’ll hunt on yours first because if I return the favour it’s illegal, ha.
Pretty hard to police this rule.

It’s almost impossible to police it but that doesn’t mean that it’s not illegal. No different than guys giving landowners a bottle or cash in order to get permission to hunt their property. It’s illegal but it happens every day and very few people ever get charged with an offence for it because it is very hard to prove.

About the only way a person would get charged and convicted, is if they do something stupid, like post ads asking for compensation , or offering compensation, for access to private land for the purpose of hunting. Posting ads for a trade hunt that includes access to private land , would also make it easy for F&W.
