Default Big speeds out of a 270win

Still really new to the reloading game but I made some 150gr nosler partitions for my TC prohunter 270win. The max load in my manuals showed I should get 2800fps . I put 2 shots through my chronograph and got 2959 and the 2nd @ 3003fps. Do you think it's the 28" barrel that made it go way faster than it was suppose to go? The gap in speed between the 2 loads I think is the crappy $40 hornady scale that came with my kit, I have a rcbs charge master on the way and hopefully weighing won't be so painful.

I'm curious to see what kind of speeds I might get out of some 130gr ttsx I have done up.

a low extreme spread with "decent " velocity is far more important than a load with and high extreme spread with some shots well over 3000FPS and others down in the low 2900's.
If you can keep them very close to 2950 you are good to go.

I would bet your longer barrel is helping a bit. Usually the reloading manual will tell you what model of gun and length of barrel they used to test the loads with. What powder and what charge are you using in your load? I shoot the .270 win as my main gun and absolutely love it. I'm getting 2950 with 140 gr bullets in a 26" barrel. I can push it faster, but this is where the accuracy is.

I have achieved 3140fps out of my .270win with 130gr bullets.

Default 270 speeds

I thought I had a fast accurate load figured for my 270. Avg was about 3100fps with 130gr SST's and 3/4" groups. Developed this mostly in 8-12 degree weather and no pressure signs. Shot this same load the other day in above 20 degree weather and bolt was sticky and noticeably more recoil
Have to scale it back a grain or two.

I'm hoping my new scale that's coming will close this spread a bit. My current scale that came with my kit seems to wonder +/- 0.2grains. I have to weigh every load over and over to try and get a consistent charge.

Try some RL17 if you can find it, if you want top speeds. And yes, I'd say your longer barrel is helping you get the higher velocity.

Good luck, load smart and safely.

An old load for my .270 was 52 gr of imr4350 pushing 130gr core lokt right around the 3000 fps was the go to hunting load. I'm now experimenting with the berger vld. Having great success with 4064 ( was all I could find for powder until recently, now have 4350 to play with again) I'm curious how these bergers will like 4350.

My rifle likes the factory 150gr burger vld, also seems to like anything with Imr4350 behind it.

Gotta love inexpensive chronographs. Made liars of a lot of people and companies. I've always found significant differences between book and measured velocities. Just watch for signs of high pressure.

This was the most expensive one at cabelas at the time haha. Anyways it seemed to clock realistic speeds from my 7mm-08 and 120gr ttsx. It's only getting 2830fps out of my sako a7.

53.5 gr IMR 4350, 140gr Hornady BTSP, 22" BBL Win FWT 2975 fps .75" groups. Have had this load for 30+ years and it has never let me down.

Also like 4064 for accuracy, but could only get 2850, which is still not bad.

Cheers

Ditto here, the 28 inch barrel gave you those extra high readings.
Standard in my 24 inch barrelled rifles for my full house loads without excessive pressure signs for 130 grain bullets and H4350 or RL 22 type powder is around 3050-3100 fps.
For 150 grain bullets it is around that 2850-2900 fps.
