Default Re: moose...what is this?

So I took a friend out this morning to some land I have access too, and he folded his tag on a nice young bull moose not 20 minutes later. While field dressing, he noticed something on the trachea, and on the neck along spine....and then later as he was cutting it in garage (while I sat and drank some fortified coffee and watched, I'm kind of a lazy hunter helper)...he noticed more of the same on spine under tenders. They look like black beans, very soft, feels like a blood clot, not that big.

What is this? I've not seen it before. Liver and lungs were very clean. Moose was hit high in lung quartering to, exit high mid back. Only went 100 yards and folded up...

Anyone have an answer on this? Tried to upload pics but file is too big ....I sent pics to huntinstuff because I thought he knew everything, but he actually didn't. But he said if I sent it to his lab in Edmonton, he would put some on the pellet grill for analysis.

Anyone else have an idea?

I saw something similar when gutting a lamb one time. We guessed they were cysts. Lamb roasted just fine.

Look like completely harmless hemal nodes. Google for images.
Found another spelling: Haemal lymph nodes
https://open.alberta.ca/dataset/38d9...t-sep-2012.pdf
Quote:
Hemal nodes are pea-sized spherical structures embedded within the fatty tissues of the body.

Hemal nodes are usually maroon or black and may be either solid or fluid-filled. They resemble a very small blood clot and are often misinterpreted as tumors or bird shot.

That looks exactly right redneck! Thanks for that. We didn't think it was an issue (like flukes...) but still wanted to know. Appreciate that.

Credit where it is due, Walking Buffalo called it. Weird I have never seen it before. It's not exactly the first moose....

We called them warbles in cattle... a small fly lays it's eggs on the cows leg, they hatch then travel through the animal till reaching the back, then burrow out, fall off and start the cycle all over again.
