Default cerecote or gunkote

Does anyone know who in the Western Provinces does this?

I've had them teflon and powder coat rifles before. I'm going to give them a call and chat about it but wasn't a fan of the powder coatings thickness the first go round.

I agree, I have had them teflon and powder coat aswell. The teflon looked better than the powder coat, but didnt wear nearly aswell. The powder coat lasted fairly well, but looks like thick rattle-can paint. I used gunkote on a shotgun - looked very good, but I sold it before I could tell how well it would stand up.

I'd be interested in a couple of closeups of the black powder coat. Mine was the "cast iron" colour.

Alberta Tactical does use Epoxy Ceramic (Cerokote) coating, and it is much more durable compared to Armacoat or Duracoat.

I have a teflon coated rifle and would never do it again. Not very durable.

I thought powder coating was the way to go, but if it wears anything like my powder coated game cart, I don't want it.

The guys on 24hrcampfire rave about ceracoating. Alberta Tactical Rifles ceracoats.

The newest Shooting Times had an interesting article on various coatings, advantages/disadvantages.

I will be getting my rifle(s) ceracoated.

I did, but they couldn't offer what I needed. They can't, or won't do the bolt shroud, safety, trigger shoe, extractor, or collar. I'm not overly interested in a multi coloured rifle.

Some of those parts I could potentially see no problem in having coated ( trigger shoe for instance), but perhaps they may be unwilling to do the trigger due to the fact it gets baked on, and the baking process could affect the trigger springs? Its not that high a temperature admittedly, but you do have to consider business liability in such matters. Some of those other items could be matched with Testors model paint, though obviously those would not exhibit the same wear characteristics.......... Just a suggestion.
If I recall correctly, Rick at ATR told me that cerakoting a barrelled action costs $200 (insert obligatory legal disclaimer on price quote accuracy here).

That is to bad. I want to get my 30-06 ceracoated and was thinking they were the guys. Be interested to know what you come up with, Chuck.

I'm thinking of having my new project Ceracoated by Rick at ATR.

Anyone have pictures of his cerakote work?

Thanks,

Tk

P.S. I can live with a silver trigger and safety on my matte black gun.

Cerakote also makes a product that can be sprayed on and does not need to be baked. I have done one barrel and synthetic stock myself with the product and so far it has seemed pretty durable.....

Cerakote is definately a modern finish. I'll see if I can post some photos.

Precision Shooter,
Thanks for the Photos!

Did Rick do the ceracote for you?
Are you happy with the finish?
What was the cost?

Thanks,

Tk

I do my own cerakote. First one probably in Canada but on a very limited basis.

You want to be selective on who you have do the coatings. Like machining you need to develop a certain skill level.

I haven't seen ATR or Rick's finished product.

Thanks for the info Precisionshooter.

I have a couple of projects just begging for Ceracote, and like you said, I am being very selective about who does the work for me.

What equipment did you need to complete the project?
Where did you order the Ceracote from?

Thanks,

Tk

I Cerakote as part of my business but at the present time only rifles I build. One man show with occassional support makes for long deliveries so I have to be selective of what I do.

Try contacting NIC Industries - Brandon

brandon@nicindustries.com

Brandon isn't an applicator but has very good information.

You can order cerakote from Brownells as well. I've done a bunch of reading about the application of the coating and I figure I'll just give it a try myself.

Im only doing some small parts (largest one being an barrel free action).

I've been waiting for the bench top sandblasters from Princess auto to come on sale.

I'll probably wait until the spring to try spraying the cerakote since i'll be doing it in my garage in a make shift spray booth.

As long as 1 gets 100% of any oils off the metal the finish goes on well and looks good.
It does add a thou or 2 dimensionally which is why all parts may not be done.
Several years ago when we first started using the product some was sprayed into the ways of a Nesika action, this had to be removed as the bolt would bind where the ceracote was oversprayed. We had 1 bugger of a time getting the product removed.

Those are pretty nice (and tight actions). I'm sure with a standard Rem 700 action, there is enough room (aka action slop) to coat the raceway

Quite likely could get away with it, but my experience is that the metal to metal contact is smoother than coated parts rubbing together.
This may change as thing wear in, I have not tried that however.
After finding out how hard it is to make Ceracote go away I don't think I want to try it just to see.

Thanks for your input and the pictures!

What do you charge to coat a rifle?

Everything except the scope, rings and stock.
