What do you base that opinion upon? How many guns in your safe? Have you owned either, or shot either for that matter?

Default 338 win mag VS 375 H&H

It's funny that you would come up with this post... Because I was just trying to review some ballistic and recoil comparisions with three cartridges... The 338 WM, the 358 STA, and the 375 H&H. I could see that they were all a tad heavy in the recoil department and any of them can do whatever is called for in Canada, and probably in most places around the globe. Yet, the major problem with the tables I was looking at, more often then not, used different weights of guns. So I really didn't feel like I got a good comparison between the three cartridges. Because the tables I was looking at didn't provide enough information regarding different grains of bullet for each caliber of gun, for me to make a sound decision. I as going to copy them down but I got lazy... Shucks, Now having read these posts I will have to go back and look at all of them again.

Personally I like all of them and will no doubt end up with one of more of them. In closing this is the result of reading a bunch of articles on Long Range Hunting...!

Dont Stop at the regular .338 win mag... There is plenty more type of .338 you can get.. i wont name everything.. but i do own a .375 H&H, a .338 Lapua Mag and a .338 Titan. Those 3 are what i call " stopping power "

But Seriously.. if your looking for a real .338... Get a .338 Lapua.. you will love it forever and other caliber are just not fun anymore after you shot your first bullets with that beast. .338 Titan is also awesome.. but can only shoot 600 bullets through the barrel.. so its more like my " fun gun " :|

I love my .338winmag. I contemplated a lot of ideas before getting it, it won because of bullet selection, ballistics and availability of ammo if necc. And it happens to be a nicer gun to shoot than the 3 different 7mmRemmags I had.

With the correct stock that fits you, the .338 is indeed a wonderful cartridge to shoot.

It has already been said, but here it is again... Staying in North America? Go with the 338 win, or going to the dark continent? Then go with the 375 H&H.
But be aware that the 338win can't get any bigger, nor the 375 any smaller, so which devil do you want go with?
You could load down a 375 H&H for North American game, and arguably load up a 338 win for African game, however your still under that pesky caliber restriction.
Personally I would be in quite the predicament, and to be honest, eventually I would end up with both, the 375 H&H would be first, probably, maybe, well its 50/50

I am sure that you may be able to convince one/some of your friends to let you let a few rounds fly with their 338 or 375, and shop around, getting my hands on as many rifles as possible, and eventually buying what ever I am most comfortable.

Default .338

I have a 7mm Rem mag and am thinking .338 Win mag. If I ever go to Africa, it won't be with a .375 HH(not that there's anything wrong with that). I'll bring a .416 Rem mag.

I believe Winchester developed the 338 win Mag to compete with the 375H&H. I own a 338WM in a tikka T3, and use it for all my big game hunting as well as some plinking. Honestly who hasn't shot gophers with a "big" rifle. In the mid 90's I had a 375H&H built on an P17 action. I loved that rifle and can't recall why I sold/traded it. in my opinion 338win is the more practical round, but get what makes you happy.

30 years with a 338 mag. Its my bear and moose gun.
See a lot of Grizz. tracks where I hunt now.
Not just one a day ,but all day long .

If I would do it over again .....375 mag.

Makes you feel more, warm and fuzzy inside when you walk alone !

"375" just rolls off the tongue better than almost anything, including
" '06"!

I just checked recoil. Might as well get the 375 in a rifle that fits you well. Felt recoil won't be a heckuva lot different than the 338. Either you can handle recoil or you can't.

I'm loving the 338 win mag. The 250 grains really let u know the power in ur hands. But just relax behind her. When I shoot her I can actually see the reticle still. Lol just have to practice but the recoil isn't for everyone. I really enjoy shooting it.

This thread has got me wanting a big thumper again. Last summer I toyed with a 338 Rum in a Remington 700 XCR II (fairly light rifle). I shot about thirty rounds without the muzzle brake off the bench. It wasn't fun, but I could handle it off the bench. What scared me is that when I was in the field, in a rush to pop off a shot, I'd get scoped.

I'd go 375, I found the 338 and similar calibers have a sharper kick where's the 375 was more of a big push.if that makes sense. Plus who knows one day Africa may happen or big big bears.

I have owned both, and gave up the 375 in favour of teh 338 largely because of the terrain I typically hunt here in Southern Alberta. If a person regularly hunted bush with typically shorter shots I am going to play Devils Advocate and cast a vote for the 9.3x62 Moderate recoil, heavy bullets and power to spare.

Default .338 WM vs .375 H&H

So I see a lot of how fast, how strong comments.

What about loading down comments ? Versatility, as we all don't hunt Africa.

Can a .338 Win mag be loaded down the same way a .375 H&H Mag can be ?

I have used 200 gr FN for Deer in my .375 H&H.

That asked, I have and shoot both so I'm not much help in your decision of which "one" .

Why would you need to load it down? Just use properly constructed quality bullets and it shouldn't cause any more damage than a 30-06 or any number of other calibers.

If recoil is the concern, just put a decelerator pad on it and you're good to go.

I have both. I use neither. I split the difference and use a 9.3
The end result is about the same for all 3

Recoil isn't an issue, I find the recoil acceptable.

As I indicated, versatility. I like the rifle but I don't want to shoot deer with 300 gr @ 3000 fps. Most of my Deer hunting is in farmland, with shots 200 yards or less.

I have done the mental masturbation between these to for as longer than I care to admit too.

In my experience, your 7mm with good heavy bullets will do virtually what a .338win will do.

The .375H&H is a great round and sigficant jump in power and would be my choice.

Either way, both are a first class choice.

That's a stone cold killer. Do you have a removable break on it?

Default 35-300 win

I bores out a 300-win to 35 cal and ran a 35-300 reamer very powerful to go gold panning rifle ,range and plenty of knock down power, easy to do

I have both.

The 375 h&h was purchased as an anniversary thing.

The 338wm mag as an impulse.

Unfortunately both seem to be accurate.

No adjusting to recoil, both are good.

Talk all you want about force, enjoy the moment when it connects.

Don't mess around with the medium bores if you want power. If you want bolt action, go .505 Gibbs and don't look back!

Bring a 20k budget, though.

Nah? Then either or will be good but to go International, the .375's are where it's at. If you're a smaller guy, go .375 Ruger. It's not a bad call either way, other than being esoteric.
