CFB Suffield Elk hunt/cull 2017
Hi.
I am thinking of applying for an ELK tag for the first time in CFB Suffield and if I have to hunt solo, I would like to post some questions for those who have participated in previous Suffield Elk hunts: If a hunter draws a Bull tag, and is successful in harvesting one, does the entire head including the rack have to be handed in for testing of BTB or CWD? If yes, and the tests are negative will the rack at least be returned? If not, what is the advantage, if any, of applying for a Bull tag in Suffield?
Also, in regards to game retrieval, I know it is not permitted to take vehicles off the main roads/MSR's for obvious safety reasons; although, are we allowed to use the vehicles strictly to retrieve the animal in the areas permitted for hunting? I may need vehicle to assist in field dressing.
Also, does the entire animal have to be removed by the hunter or can it be quartered, etc., and the remains left for the coyotes? In case I require a towed flat deck trailer and winch.
Regards.

take your truck to it unless you're in the no trucks area

Hunting solo at CFB Suffield, I used the 'gutless method' of cleaning my elk, and left the entire carcass on site, excepting the meat, head and one quarter with tag & evidence of sex. No problem, no questions asked at check-out station.

If you aren't in the NWA you can drive your truck right up to the downed animal. I drove about 500m off road to get one of my cows.
CWD testing is voluntary.

I would hope that CWD testing at Suffield is no longer voluntary,
Requiring spinal columns and brains to remain at the kill site or to be disposed of at a controlled location might be a proper protocol to regulate.
We have got to take the steps required to control the spread of CWD, regardless of the potential nuisance to hunters.

Cwd
I could be mistaken, but i think i remember hearing that they actually did have one elk test positive for CWD this pat season. I would assume that if this is the case, CWD testing will become mandatory again... no?

Can someone show me where in the draws books it says you get 2 tags for the antlered or antlerless CFB Suffield elk draws? Link? I don't believe it does or did I just step into some jocularity. Lol

I was one of the few to get one on the last cow hunt. Shot it at about 930 in the nwa and it took two of us most of the day to pack it out. Glad I didn't shoot two and so was my partner.

Cow is 2 tags
Bull is one tag
They email all the info after draws are awarded telling of the 2 tags for cows
I believe in August
You get 2 cow tags as it is a cull at to reduce the overall herd size
About a 50/50 chance to get a cow tags on a zero priority (last 2 years anyway)
My friend got his I got skunked should get them this year

application points equating to numbered draw summary priority list

It seems the higher the number on the priority list the greater chance of success; although, from what I understand it is the lower number of application points that determines the greater chance of success.

Higher priority points are awarded tags first. You get a point for every year you put in without drawing

Then you didn't put in for the last season of cow elk on the base. Everyone with a priority was drawn and 31% of those with a 0 got the tags in 732.

It appears that the later in the season you apply for the greater chance you will get drawn even for a 0 priority applying for a Cow tag.
