Default 2017 Snow Goose Report

Was getting excited about the 2017 season coming up and dreaming of red hot barrels and it snowing geese.

We always watch reports here http://www.nodakoutdoors.com/forums/...9e35b98292786c
every year to try and guess the arrival.

The Nodak site usually follows the central flyway, and it would be better if we could get members to post sightings here for the migration between West Sask. and eastern Alberta (west central flyway). Thanks for any reports you can give.

Please post any photos of your snow goose hunts as well.

Good luck this year and do your part to save the tundra!

Likely we're a bit early but if we bump it a few times closer to the date, hopefully we'll get some helpful hints

Default Guess the date of the first report of a snow goose into Alberta

Any guesses on the arrival of the first snow goose in Alberta. I'm thinking April 6th?

i think the reason people are not getting too excited is the fact that the snows are still quite a ways away. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dn53m4XDPT4

I noticed a post yesterday on FB where they were hitting them pretty hard in Wyoming. See how the weather holds up here I suppose. Have a look at the NOAA snow line map and guess from there.

had about 6 of them fly over the house yesterday. im just off the bow river in CGY. I had to do a triple take on em as they should not have been here yet. Couple early birds looking for worms i guess.

They may have actually overwintered here. Second year in a row they were found in the winter bird count. The three in the article stayed all winter and my understanding was there were several found again this year during the Christmas count.

This thread reminds me of the guys killing spring bears lol It's April 1st so why are the bears not out yet lol
Just cause the season is on doesn't mean there will be many out there.
From what i know there are a few snows in Alberta but unles you live in the area its not worth the drive/time/or money to start hunting them. Give it a few weeks and you will be in business

I feel like the season is put on just to upset hunters haha. In all honesty it is silly for snow geese to be here on season opener; or the spring bear season. You MAY be lucky to see one on season opener as well.

Does anyone else get texts/phone calls from people saying "there's a whole bunch of snow geese, in this field", so you drive out there, and it ends up being 50-60 swans? Or is it just me?

There is a huge slough at my neighbours they use each fall and spring. Last spring it held an estimated half million for a month. You want to talk about noise?! In fall it typically holds flocks about 50,000+ in size throughout most of the season. I am on the SK side of Lloyd. You guys on the AB side that want to hammer spring snows need only look in the Kitscoty to Islay to Dewberry area. It loads up HEAVY with Kenilworth Lake being a major stopover roost. Most days it holds 50,000 - 100,000 during both fall and spring migrations.

I was at Buck Lake fishing and tons of Canada Geese flying. Genesee is open water so that is where they sit I would think.

I was fairly sure I saw maybe 30 this afternoon, looked too big for gulls, too small for swans. They were quite a way out in a field, no binos to confirm with.
Whack of migrator lesser Canadas around. Not a duck in sight once you get out of the Calgary area though, couple of roost areas I drove by are still froze. Lots of sheet water in the fields.
