Default Cracked SKS stock

Hey,

My SKS has a huge crack in the forestock, from the very end back about three inches. At its widest, it's about 2mm. Huge.

The last time I shot it, it shot really high, no doubt because of the crack.

I love the wood stock, but this is obviously a big issue. Any suggestions?

I hadn't thought of that. Thanks very much!
I really love the wood,so switching to polymer is a disappointing solution.

I think the plastic stocks for them are pretty flimsy. I would try gluing it back together. I think that far from the end shouldn't have too much effect on the overall shooting. I would probably try some bedding compound on it and clamping it together. And it being a big crack, I might groove or drill the wood slightly to give it more surface area to bond to. If you do the whole fore end it should end up being pretty sturdy.

For the price that the plastic stocks, I would probably end up getting a Boyds laminate wood stock, if yours ends up being unfixable. Or even modifying it somewhat.

A lot of military rifles end up shooting high. Get a sight adjustment tool for the front sight, if you don't have one already. That should fix you up.

You can find an other stock at almost any gun show for about $20-$50.
That is what I would do for the most cost effective solution.

^"forestock" as in the muzzle-end of the stock itself...or..the chunk of wood that is fitted over the gas tube? Either way, these are readily available parts...just check over on G nutz.

^yep...those are smart-looking. If I used my SKS more, I'd probably get one. The 2-3 outings a year to plink don't really warrant it. If I wasn't saving for another rifle, I'd consider one for sure.

This type of crack is very easy to fix and it will hold forever as there is little tension in that area. If you prefer not to a used SKS stock can easily be had for $30, the forearm parts about $10. CGN has at least 3 on there at any given time.

I would buy another SKS for a parts gun before I paid big money for what some of the aftermarket guys want price wise.
