Default Ideas of value?

This was my great-grandfathers gun. Winchester 38-70 Model 1886 ser. #96001

Only 800 of these ever made and when I look values are all over the map.

So if there were only 800 made, and I don't doubt it, why the strange serial number? Was it the first one made or the last? Or maybe only 800 in 38-70?

selling isn't even a consideration. I tracked the serial # and it was built in the 1890's I also have my grandfathers Marlin 38-55 which is a tack driver.
