how many decoys for Snows?

I want to take my three year old out for a snow goose hunt, I know a spot with potential, going to use the bow,

Just wondering if 1 doz will bring them in?

Thoughts?

i've heard the 300 number thrown around before.

you could try white plastic bags on sticks and then a dozen decoys to get your numbers up while still being reasonable.

We usually do 200+
You can get them in with fewer decoys, but since you are hunting with a bow I would recommend more. It is easier to get them to commit on a larger spread. Hunting them in the spring is also considerably harder for a number of reasons.

i wouldnt go out in the spring without at least 400 dekes.

If you set up in the exact spot they want to be, you may get lucky. Couple dozen more deke's would sure help. I do okay with my 12 doz shells and silos but don't use a bow.

I just finished off making 224 2D and 3D decoys, going out with a few friends with a 2-3 dozen wind socks to add a bit more motion. Having done my reading the more the better.

I've heard as mentioned above 100+, 200+, 500+ and even read of 1000+ spreads.

Sure a dozen might be just fine if you get a good spot and have a good blind.

The first bird has to land somewhere right!

We usually use the ratio of 1/10. So for an example if you want to pull a flock of ten you'll need about 100 decoys. Now if you do some good scouting and are setup on the field they were on the day before, you may not need a single decoy as they may feel very safe on the field and with some good camo to match the field, they may just land in the goose poop from the day before.

One of the issues with spring snows is they are in a rush to move, not like in the fall where they'll hang around a bit. They seem more inclined to change fields from evening to morning and morning to evening. If you are on a flight path close to the field they want into, small spreads may get you a look with the first few small batches of birds off the roost. You never know with snows, sometimes they won't even look at a big spread that is in the previous night field.., they are fickle birds.

Unfortunately one dozen socks wil be tough. Not like shooting dark geese. Safety in numbers for snows and understand they have been shot consistently at for past 8 moths with only the summer months as a reprieve. You don't need 1000+ socks like we use but 10 dozen is a start. Reasonably cheap enough. Add yearly and build spread over time.

See if u can tag along with other members or friends. We like Sherpas on big spreads lol plus be cool to see one taken with a bow. Hard to keep a 3 yr old entertained but awesome father son outing

I have lots of dark geese decoys but only a dozen whites, will the dark decoys attract the whites?

Not usually we have tried it a few times in the fall to try and bring snows in and all we get is specks and once and a while a 100 yard look from a lone snow or 2. Can always throw white tube socks on canada heads and call em blues

buy some coroplast sheets and make your own silo's,this stuff is cheap and can make 3 dozen at least out of three sheets for under $100 I believe

We used to hunt snows with home made decoys when we were kids. We painted file folders white. They worked real well and we could fit a pile of them in one vehicle. Only issue was if it was super windy but we never really had issues at all. Cheap as can be as well. Funny the things we used to do as kids when broke lol
