The back 40 and tripods
What are all you sheep chasers and back country spotters using for tripods under your glass? Just replaced my old spotter with a swaro sts 80 in the past I haven't bothered to put one in my pack cause of the poor quality of scope I had. Don't really have an idea of what features are must haves and what is just added weight and useless fluff. After looking a lot online I see there is a vast price range and a lot of different models. With the cost of the swaro scope my budget is pretty open I don't want to buy junk.

I don't have a spotter but I just bought an inexpensive tripod for my chronograph a few weeks ago at The Source for right around $20.
It met the criteria I was looking for, that being compact and liteweight,as I do also plan to buy a spotting scope in the not too distant future...and cheap, lol.
Haven't had opp to field test yet, other then set it up with chrono at home, but it seems durable enough for my purposes?Im certain it weighs less then 1lb,has telescoping legs, and comes with a cheap
nylon carrying bag.

I use a manfrotto tripod and head for sheep, elk, mule deer, antelope spot and stall hunting... it's a little heavy when carrying it up the mountain, but when you're on a wind-swept ridge, you'd be glad for the stability. The first time I hunted sheep, I thought the lighter the better - but once I got to the high country and tried glassing some far away rams, the scope was blown around by the wind and I couldn't see anything. I bought the manfrotto when I got back home, and it's performed great.

If I could afford a Swaro spotting scope, I would definitely be looking at a Manfroto / Swaro / or Vortex tripod.
The only things I'd be worried about would be weight & size, if I was using it for a sheep/back-country hunt.

I got a outdoorsman compact medium tripod with a pan head for it and it works awesome for my swaro 80 sts. Very solid and have had no real problems in the wind with it.

Manfroto seems to come up in a lot of Google searches is there a model that is more popular for one reason or the other or is it just quality stuff. I was looking at the swaro tripod, It it gets mixed reviews from the bird watching guys and there's not much on it from the hunting guys. The vortex summit ss seems good but what's better pan head or ball head. What about heights, do you guys find it usefull to be able to stand and spot or is it better to get a shorter one. Carbon fibre vs aluminum does it matter or do you have to put a bag of rocks from a hook on them anyhow when it's windy?

I have never used mine fully extended, always sitting... Slik has some popular models that are lightweight and compact. I definitely prefer panhead and if you do a lot of glassing id recommend getting a mount to use your binos on the tripod.
Im partial to the outdoorsman's gear but there are a lot of good options out there.

I can't give you any advice on types of tripods, but one thing people seem to be overlooking is the potential noise from the tripod. If you have it strapped to your backpack and are going through some brush is it going to be letting off big loud pings every time a tree branch hits it? Seems like an area where carbon fiber would be better than aluminum.
