Depends on when exactly you plan on hunting. I would try some calling come mid September on but before that spot and stalk would be best. Not to say some light calls before won't work but you'd be lucky.

I like to grunt, thrash a few bushes and trees, rub deadfall up and down a tree...wait for thirty minutes or so and then move on 50 yards or so and repeat, had a bull come in to this to check out the competition.
Ya never know so be ready.

I have called in bulls as early as sept 4 They arent aggressive and the real early season ones all came in quiet no grunting or thrashing. They would just "appear" Likely more curious at that point to the calling. They will come in early but I wouldnt count on lots of action the first couple weeks of September.
