Tinner Restoration Project
A new project has begun, the restoration of a 12' Harber Manufacturing tin boat.
When I became the latest owner, it came to me with a rattle can paint job. First thing to do was remove the rotten transom plate, random hex screws and old rod holder mounts.
Once all that was removed, it was off to the paint shop. There the boat was blasted with plastic media, as it is 0.050 aluminum, blasting with sand would likely take too much of the aluminum with the paint.
Once the boat had the old paint removed, a previous name was revealed - "The SS Adams"

Change the wood on the transom, and I think it looks great the way it is!

Once blasting was complete, an epoxy based primer was applied to the interior and exterior of the entire boat.
After the primer cured, a grey bedliner was sprayed to the entire interior of the boat. This will seal all the seams, and provide grip to the aluminum surfaces.
Once again, the bedliner was cured at 140F overnight. Once cured, it was retaped and flipped over for the hull paint. A nostalgic apple red. One more cure, and the painting process is complete.
Here is a close up view of the interior, with the new bedliner.
Next up, installing the new transom plate and fishing accessories.

Did a box company do the bed liner or you with over the counter stuff. A friend wants to do his boat with a liner type material. Boat looks great.

Looks good, I like it, that's what I need. You must have access to a body shop?

I used a product called Raptor Liner by U-POL. It can be ordered online, and is one of the UV stable, tintable bed liners.

Very nice job ! Trippled in value, I would have changed the back seat around a bit, sitting sideways makes it easier to steer and you don't get a twisted back.

Great Pic's. I am currently doing much the same to a 14' aluminum.
Went with black on box linear on the inside.
Building fishing deck in the front.
Thinking of painting but I ain't no Picaso!!

I agree, however sitting sideways in a 12', puts your weight over to one side, increasing the angle of list. Still to be installed, is a padded seat and swivel on a quick release bracket, and 3 rod holders.

Agreed! Why would anyone spend this much time, effort and money on an old boat? I am glad you sir, see the same that I do in it.
Tin projects are a ton of fun; simple, easy to work on, and the results are fantastic. I get just as much out of doing it, as the boat gets from the face lift.

Not if you off set the weight with the fuel can and a 30lb tackle box on the opposite side under the other seat.

I see your point, however I would need a 190lb tackle box plus the 30lb tank to offset my weight
The motor going on the back is a trolling motor, so steering will be a breeze!

Cut, drilled, sanded and stained the transom plates and installed TC rating plate, rod holders and rocket launcher yesterday. No pics of the transom plate unfortunately.
Oars have been sanded smooth, and refinished. Next up, installing the finished transom plates and mounting the seat.

I have an old 14' Harber. I found that if you cut marine plywood very carefully, you can tap it into the lateral ribs in the hull with a rubber mallet for a nice, tight fit and have a floor without drilling any holes or using adhesives.

Looks good man! What is rough cost to get it sprayed? I'd like to do mine to protect it.

That, is an idea that I have not heard of before. Examining the ribs, I can see how they would hold the floor in place. Makes taking them out to reduce weight, very simple. Thanks for that Thumper!

Entirely too much I'll admit. It does bring new life into an old boat however, and it should help with traction and durability.
I didn't want to use black bed liner, or a cheap bed liner spray for a couple reasons:
-Not UV stable (will fade and get "chalky" over time)
-On hot summer days the inside of the boat would get really hot
There's a couple of tintable, UV stable products out there. Monstaliner and Raptor Liner. Both look like great products.

hahahaha - You've got me there!
Unfortunately the boat isn't for my use, it will be going up for sale upon completion. Just wanted another boat project to pass the spring doldrums.
Guess I better lose some weight eh?!

That is an amazing job!
Projects like that where you get to see something old and neglected become new again are incredible.
Kudos to you good sir!

Project complete!
I installed the transom plates today and took the little red boat for a spin on the lake this evening - it handles like a charm.
