Default 257 wby trim pilot.

Hey guys,
I would like to reload for my 257 wby but have a problem. I have a Lyman universal trimmer. Lyman doesn't make trim pilots for 257 wby. Does anyone know of their are any other pilots that will fit this trimmer? I've searched to no avail!

Thanks.

Did you look for one for a 25-20 or a 257 Roberts or a 25-06? Same pilot. The key, is that it is .257 dia., Cartridge size does not matter, bullet size does.

I'm pretty sure the universal trimmer comes with a pilot marked .25 and it will work on any .257 cal neck.

It didn't come with the number 25 but I ordered it separate because I thought it would be fine. I emailed Lyman about itnheres what they said. The #25 Trimmer pilot for the Universal Case Trimmer is part #7821986, and it is suitable for the 25 WSSM, .25-.20, 25-06, and the 250-3000 Savage. Unfortunately we have not made one for the 257 Weatherby Mag.

Best Regards,

I was hoping they were wrong and it would still work. You guys think it will?

I think the person you were talking to didn't know what they were talking about. The .25 cal pilot will work with any .257 cal case.

I'm not home right now or I'd check my universal trimmer but I know that I never had to order a 25 pilot and I know with certainty that I've used it on 257 Wby cases. Makes me wonder if Lyman has changed what they are putting in the box or if maybe they missed putting the 25 pilot in there.

You can't "chase the lands" as you say but the case can still be too long for the chamber. Other things that the universal trimmer can do for you is square the case mouth and turn the necks of cases.

The throat is long, but the case can still bottom out in the chamber and bind on the bullet ,causing pressure to rise to excessive levels.

I have the Lyman Universal trimmer and a 257 Bee. The regular 25 pilot works perfectly fine and has for many years. The guy at Lyman was misinformed.
