In my opinion I would say you can't go wrong with the 7mm mag. It will work for everything you said and if you reload there are lots of wieghts available to you.

very open to opinion, but 30.06 is a classic, I like the 280rem. But my personal fav is the 375 h&h I know a little over kill but just love shooting it and packing it around.

.260 rem. lol As mentioned 30.06 and you can't go wrong. Large variety of bullet weights available and everyone makes one. There's a reason its over 100 years old and still as popular as it is

30-06 is a great all around one for many reasons, ammo variety and availability etc

ppsssshtttttt......ahhhhh

....can of worms is open and ready for business....

My vote for a first time hunter or young hunter is a .270 Winchester, for someone a little bigger or more experienced and with a few extra dollars I say the .300 Weatherby. Cause really what can't you kill in North America with a .300 Weatherby? The .30 cals are nice in that the range of bullets offered is excellent, load it down for varmints (although really over-kill) or up for big stuff.

.300 win
Great ballistics!
I don't have a issue with recoil. I can see some guys point of view on the .270.
If I see that once in a lifetime animal I want to give it to em.
Anyways my two cents!

There is only one caliber that will work on all the species you mentioned. Any other caliber and you risk losing your animal...

The 30/06. The only caliber that should be allowed. lol

Seriously though...anything in the 270win or 7-08 class up to a 338 win mag (or heck way bigger) will work good. Been said a hundred times...get something you can shoot comfortably and accurately and you're off to the races.

7mm rem mag...period, flat, fast shooting, bullet weight options, fairly cheap ammo. I find that the 30-06 is a little lacking in the range category.

x2 on that shoot comfortably and accurately my choice would be a 270win 2nd choice would be 30-06 but more important is fit witch means comfortably and accurate.

both nice cartridges but can be a little hard to find in small towns hope fully thier popularity grows so ammo is a little easier to find. most small places do not stock any thing that is not real popular. if your tying money up in stock you want what moves reasonably fast.

Since you asked for caliber, any bullet from .264" on up will do. As far as cartridge, anything from 260rem on up would be a good choice.

I like 308. It is readily available in many different grains, is easily able to take any game we have in North America, and every manufacturer makes a rifle chambered in it. And you can find ammo for it in nearly every small town across the country.

Ballisitically it is good, not as flat as some, and not as powerful as others, but still very good even for those long out there shots. It is easier on the shoulder than many other calibers, such as those based on the 30.06, and much easier than magnums.

As with anything, bullet placement is more important than the bullet.

LOL my thoughts as well.

Tanner, you will get recommendations for a myriad of calibers, because everyone has a favourite. Generally they all work. You can effectively use anything that's legal, from the .243 on up, though many would say the lower end is "iffy" for elk (you have to be more cautious and deleiberate with your shots, from what I've heard anyway. never tried myself). I would say that from .270 on up no one is going to say that you shouldn't use it or that it won't be effective on the game you identified. Go as high in calibre as you like as long as you can handle the recoil and shoot effectively.

So have fun with the 27 pages of comments you are about to read. "What caliber is best for..." is the KING of threads on this board. LOL

And the vast majority of the posters will post about specific cartridges, and ignore the fact that the OP asked about caliber.

The 308win, 30-06, and 300win mag are all different cartridges, but they are all the same caliber.

7mm / 270WSM If weight is an issue the 270 WSM and is shorter lighter action might be a plus

my choice 300 win mag, 30-06, or 308 win. they're all common enough to find ammo everywhere and they'll all easily do it if you can hold up your end.

I'd even go a little lower and bring in the 25's.......I got no issue shooting anything with my 257bee and 115gr tsx's.

She's a little light for moose IMO but it kills em' dead

My personal everything rifle is a 300win.
