Default Savage Axis opinions?

Well it seems I won a Savage Axis in 270 from another site. Wondering what peoples opinions are on this firearm?? Would it be worth my while to buy some rings and mount a Leupold VX2 on it and hunt with it? Or should I sell it and buy something else?? Opinions??

Default Why not.

I would put the scope on it and see if it's a shooter if it isn't you can always pull the scope and sell it.

I have two, one .223 and one .308, both with upgraded scopes. They are accurate and reliable. I put over 200 rounds through the 223 and 50 or so through the .308. So far so good

I don't care for them, but that doesn't mean you can't hunt with it. Give it a try and see what you think. Always good to have a backup/loaner around as well.

if its from a sporting goods store id leave it in the box as new and see if the management will put the proceeds towards a preferred model with a cash injection from you.
-unless its potentially the best gun in your litter.
-you have to take it as is
-pay it forward on this site with an impromptu draw for some junior AO shooter. we havent had a token giveaway for a while, i think it was Mudbugs kid got the last one.

Had a 22-250 and it felt cheap, the stock is light though. My biggest issue was the bolt throw is pretty extreme. Maybe its because I am used to my Abolt 300wsm but the bolt was mm away from the scope. Accurate, but ended up selling it.

Put a good scope and rings on it. Nothing wrong with them they're cheap but good shooters, perfect rifle for youngsters, or if it's all you can afford for now.

In the end, its going to do exactly what a more expensive rifle will do. It really depends on whether you like it or not. If not, don't even put a round through it.

I agree with Bigbuck here. I have one that I did a wildcat on and it shoots great now that I took it off the plastic stock. Went from a gun that had groups a 200 yards resembling a 50 yard shotgun pattern to consistently hitting steel at 400. Not a fan of the stocks on them, put wood on it and it should shoot good

I have one (.223) that shoots well. I put a Boyds thumbhole stock on it and upgraded the scope. It has been a good accurate gun for me, but then I buy my guns to shoot and hunt with, not to try and impress others with a name, or how much I paid for them.

If you won it, keep it. It just may end up being the most accurate rifle you own. You never know. There is something to be said for having a rifle you just don't give a darn about (if it gets beat up).

Give it a try. I had 2 Axis II's and both were good. The only downfall is the Axis trigger is usually not that good but give 'er rip!
