Shoot what you're most comfortable with. It's highly unlikely the animals you kill will care one iota what bullet just smoked them.

I'd bring up which calibers have "killed" the most North American wild game, quite effectively I might add, since...forever...but that won't matter to the new cal range snipers.

interesting.........

Nosler Accubond 140 gr .277 BC = .496
Nosler Accubong 140 gr .284 BC = .485

Hmmm.....

Nosler Ballistic Tip 150 gr .277 BC = .496
Nosler Ballistic Tip 150 gr .284 BC = .493

Advantage 7mm?...yup

Differences are too small to see in the field but 7mm all the way....right.

With the same weight and nose and heel shape there will no practical difference in BC in .007 bullet diameter.

Sectional Density at work again.

I would go 280ai. In fact I would do 280rem if that was an option. I have owned a 270wsm and I didn't like it. As I reload I can't get the same factory performance As the exspensive 270wsm factory ammo. But with the 280ai your probably good to go. I have a 280rem and I treat it like a 30-06 that I can shoot lighter bullets out of only more efficiently. And this talk of elk and minimum 180 gr bullets is crazy. I have shot a large bull with a 140gr in 7-08 and a cow with a 110gr ttsx in a 270wcf with no problem both at 200m. Actually the 110 was the hammer of Thor. I should note I like the 270wcf and 280rem equally.

Is trajectory a part of ballistic efficiency or a result of it ?

That's interesting to hear. Anybody else have trouble getting factory ammo velocities when reloading for their 270 wsm?

I looked at cabelas online yesterday; seems with premium ammo only about $5 per box difference between 280ai/270WSM. Unless you are using federal blue box or Remington core-lokt not a huge difference in ammo costs. All were in the $80+ range anyhow, so the investment to get set up for reloading doesn't seem as big all of a sudden.

Oops - I was mistaken. 9 types of anmo for 270 wsm at cabelas, only 1 for 280 ai though they had some 280 as well. $78.99 for 280 AI 140 AB, $89.99 for 270 wsm 140 AB. Some of the 270 wsm was as low as $50/box.

Does this match what people are seeing - more 270 wsm on store shelves than 280 AI? What about than 280?

Less recoil and muzzle blast in a lightweight rifle especially in a 22-24" barrel with 90% of the on game performance? Also, because new guns are fun? I had a 308 and didn't really need to switch to a 7 mm and a 243 but I'm glad I did. Because guns.

Of course, if you found the STW performance not up to your standards you're going to going to like the 280 even less...

I'm thinking I'm going to bow out of this discussion. As I still have sticker shock when I hear about 80 dollar boxes of ammo. I guess I haven't gotten with the times. Should we be spending double to get another 150fps or another 2-3 grs capacity out of a cartridge. I will never know if that 1" at 300 meter savings would of changed my life for the better or made me a better hunter or shot. probably not, we all know this deep down but we choose to spend money and become emotionally invested. But that's ok I'm not judging. I like 303's and non magnum chamberings I have moved back from that magnum stuff as I it was a phase for me. But everyone will seek bigger and better at one point but 80- 120 bucks for ammo. Seriously?

I understand all of that and have no standards on guns themselves but I have developed personal preferences for certain cartridges and rifles that meet certain criteria. It appears you are on the road to doing the same thing. All good !

I noticed the same thing although it doesn't matter that much to me cause I reload. Still can't decide but I'm leaning to the 280 AI just for something different. Never been a shortmag fan.

From some of your previous posts I figured you did, but as you posted 'why' instead of 'not my preference' I thought I'd risk answering a rhetorical question.

Saw your post in the DGS thread. 338-06, 35 Whelen, 9.3x62 - very cool. Lot of similarities between the three though, no? I imagine you reload, how do I you find ammo availability otherwise? They're all SAAMI spec, but seem somewhat uncommon.

I don't need any more than what I've got, so I enjoy hearing what other people's experience and preferences are as it's cheaper than buying and selling myself . I think anything between 243 and 375 is reasonable for big game in NA. Whatever floats your boat, but I do enjoy hearing about it and reading about it when I can't be at the range or in the wilderness myself.

Well, that's a good enough reason and you would be able to share components with your 7mm as well.

Yep, it is crazy. Ammo makers do like selling us on their latest premium bullets and 'precision loaded ammo' as I'm sure the margins are better. For my 7mm, I've paid 30-55 per box. Goes higher than that too. Weak dollar, etc but the price of ammo seems to be exceeding inflation by a mile. Fortunately, I've got some less expensive cartridges to practice with, and made a deal with my wife that I'd sell one when I buy one from here out.

Had been using Hornady superperformance 95 g sst in my tikka compact 243 as it shot great and was getting nearly 3100 fps out of a 20" barrel. Tried some federal blue box 100 g though and it shot great! Will run it over the chrono and will try it out to 300 yds sometime soon. May have just found my new ammo for that rifle.

Also bought the nosler and Hornady reloading manuals recently and have started reading them. I think eventually I'll work up a 140 g light recoil load and a 160 g full house load for my 7mm and use one or the other for just about everything.

Firearms, reloading and shooting are at the top of my Favs list. As with many others on here, it's almost a lifestyle where the word "need" just doesn't apply and the learning curves never end.

You are correct in suggesting my three Big Game cartridge choices overlap in abilities but between them they also offer a lot of versatility. I have an huge variety of bullets and loads available in those choices ranging from 180 gr thu to 320 gr bullets that more than cover my basic requirements by a fair margin. I simply enjoy each of them within their own capabilities. That's what floats my little boat. Good Luck with your future ventures.

People have been blasting critters with bullets prior to the 'premium bullet' craze. I admit I do reload some chamberings with accubonds and the like but I'm not doing it at 90 bucks a box. I shot my last moose with a hornady interlock at about 45cents per bullet. Preformed fine. if I used that bullet in a whizz bang super chambering it probably would of lost its copper and its performance could of been compromised but I used it in a sane chambering and didn't worry about it.
I mentioned before about the 270wsm and the performance of reloads. I was unable to attain within 150fps of the factory high priced stuff. I was only attaining standard 270 WCF velocities with 2 different rifles ( I'm a hard learner) Has anyone been able to duplicate factory loads? I would like to hear about it. Mind you I was unwilling to try every powder in the spectrum at 48 bucks a lb at the time but would like to know if it's possible to duplicate.

Yep, for sure. I took my last deer with a Remington reduced recoil 140g core-lokt out of my 7 mm. At 2800 fps, it did a great job on a good sized young buck. With the recent great accuracy I found with federal blue box for my 243 I'm definitely going to keep playing with conventional ammo. Boxes aren't flashy and prices aren't premium but still does a fine job on game.

The difference between the two ballistically when shooting equal bullet weights isn't enough to worry about.

The 280AI allows a wider range of bullet weight choices.

I would think the 280 AI would feed better too, I am just not a fan of the short stubbies in a hunting rifle. I don't own one, and wouldn't either.

You lose magazine space with a magnum.

The short mags were popular for a while but that has dwindled quite a bit.

There are reasons for that, I would guess.

270 wsm tikka t3, IMR 4350. There's several loads on reloadersnest that match that for other 130 grain loads.
And yes I've shot it over a chronograph quite abit.

I took a look on reloaders nest and the fasted imr4350 load I saw was 3275fps. And all those loads had 24 and 26"tubes. There were plenty of other ones that would probably make your gun not last that long. Do you have a aftermarket tube in your tikka? The reason I ask is that I had the same gun.

Could you go into more detail on your load? I have a t3 in 270wsm that I've yet to build a load for.
