If you are talking the ranch rifle bolt action, I did handle one. The stock is very cheap no bottom metal. The clip is held in by a plastic tab on the stock if I recall. I thought the 300blk would be cool for my daughter shooting cast as its low recoil but then I got a hold of my senses and figured my bolt action 30-30 will do what the blackout will do and more. As I can load any projectile in that with no feeding issues. Also I saw the ruger ranch priced at 650bucks. It's not a 650 dollar gun.

We might be talking about the same one. This one is a synthetic stock and is only 36" long. I mainly want it for bear protection during bow season as it's short and light.

.300 blackout is a pretty anemic round when compared to a lot of other options out there. 110gr .30cal doing 2200fps or there abouts isn't to exciting. When paired in an AR platform it was designed as a replacement for the old MP5SD and close quarters work.

^^^ this is true. 300 Blk was designed to have a heavy projectile traveling sub-sonic, and paired with a suppressor, be very quiet and yet hard hitting. Bear protection during bow season, to me, means 12 gauge. XX or slugs. You'd be better off with a Rossi ranch hand in 44 or 357.

I kind of wanted it to be able to shoot an elk at 100 yards on sept 17.
Maybe I'm asking too much from one weapon.

I'm not really wanting a shot gun.

Get yourself a lever action or a short barreled scout rifle in a more powerful cartridge. I pack my son's Ruger Compact in .260 with me all the time. Dumped an elk at 260 with it this year.

I think the barrel is 16 odd inches and it's like 5 lbs. the internet is full of issues with these guns from headspace to light primer strikes which could be the same problem. We can't shoot suppressed here in Canada so I don't see a need for it. Maybe cool in an AR.

.300BLK is not a very impressive bear defence round nor elk round nor even for WTs much beyond 150m imho.
I actually have a .300BLK conversion barrel for my RobArms XCR,bought it thinking it might be fun to hunt WT with XCR on certain days when I'm hunting the thick cover and shots will be up close and quick.
......then I came to my senses and realized that most days I hunt a mix of habitats from thick spruce forest to open fields and cut blocks, and most days I'm hunting both deer and elk....and EVERY day I have at least 6 other ballistically superior, harder hitting deer/elk/moose rifles in my gun room that I struggle to choose from.....hey,the struggle is real,lol.....and I will almost certainly never choose to carry the .300BLK over one of my other "real" hunting rifles, other then the possible exception if I knew for certain I'd be in thick cover all day and already filled my elk tag,and even then,I'd just be taking a deer with the BLK just to say I did for the pure novelty of it.
BTW.....all that said,I happen to have a .300BLK conversion for XCR for sale,lol.....seriously though.....never gonna use it as intended.
I'd change my tune if Canuckistan permitted suppressors......fat chance, our govt IS THE suppressor.

For mainly bear defence,I'd suggest a pistol grip 870 12ga with folding/telescoping stock for that 100yard elk.......but you don't want a shotgun.....so I might suggest a carbine length Rem 7600 in 30/06 or .308,again with aftermarket pistol grip and folding, telescoping,or both stock.Assuming weight and bulk are a priority, the top folding stock models like those offered from ATI and Choate are probably the most compact and lightest option,or maybe a skeletonised side folder which would also allow use of a compact optic.
Choate makes a nice sturdy model that both telescopes and folds but that's possibly the heaviest and while short and compact,a bit bulky in girth.
Some mfrs offer left side folders which allow for folded operation of the firearm.

You could order a Ruger American Ranch Rifle in 450 Bushmaster.

I have a Ruger 300Blackout. It finally came in just before back surgery last January, and i haven't gotten around to shooting it.

It is just something for me to play with, both "high" velocity and subsonic. Perhaps a truck gun? I used a 300BlkOut in an AR on a hog in Florida. It did the trick. The load supplied was the Barnes Vortex 110TTSX. Even that high velocity load was very quiet.

what he said ^^^ 300blk has less velocity and energy than a 30-30 or a 7.62x39. Not exactly great bear medicine.

the 450 bushmaster on the other hand is a cannon in the same small ranch rifle

Hardly kills a beaver?

While not the most powerful cartridge in the world, the 300blkout is in the same class as a 7.62x39 and is about 80% of a 30-30. More than enough for a beaver, could be a 150 yd deer rifle and will kill an elk at 100yds with the proper bullet placed in the proper spot. Are there better deer and elk calibers? Yes.

Barely kills a beaver? Exaggeration.

Try a different load/bullet and/or shoot better.
