Default Insect bites in the cabin?

Hey guys,

Looking for experience here. Every time I go to the cabin both the wife and I seem to get a few new insect bites. They seem to be mainly below the waist on the legs, ankles etc. Itchy as hell. Though it might be bed bugs or something but the cabin has been exposed to -40° many times throughout the winters....which would kill them. The only other thing I can think of is spiders? Lots of little cobwebs in the cabin. Was getting bites before I started handling fur this fall so ruled out fleas etc. Bought the line this spring and don't know what's getting us. Anybody else with cabins that ever get similar bites? I am guessing we get them when we are sleeping at night.....although I don't know exactly when we get them.

Thanks for your input in advance!

Do you take a dog with you in the cabin. Maybe the dog has fleas. I get the odd Spider bite in the fall when the bugs are moving into warmer spaces. Could be a spider

I suggest you use google. Lots of articles you can read about identifying bug bites.

Default insect bites in

If you happened to have a coyote or fox in or around the cabin (maybe to skin it), you might have flea bites. I look like I've been peppered with skeet shot from bites right now. Got to be more careful about handling them I guess?

We get tiny bites in our cabin bunky as well. They look like someone's tapped a fine red Sharpie all over you! Most of the bites are on the ankles or lower calves. The poor dog's belly and 'leg pits' get hit badly too. I think it's from tiny black-flies. They're much smaller than the northern or eastern black-flies - about the size of a straight-pin head. The only time you notice them is when they collect around the windows. Blood-filled ones have bloated abdomens and make a tiny blood-spot when you squish them.

Try hanging couple of those old fashioned 'Shell No-Pest strips in your cabin when it's vacant. They give off a low dosage insecticide that keeps our cabin insect-free, and without insects to eat, the spiders stay away too. Just seal any food, and then store the no-pest strips in a zip-lock bag when you arrive at the cabin, and air it out completely to dispel the lingering insecticide before you sleep there.

Home Hardware carries No-Pest strips, but they can be hard to find.

couldn't imagine staying in a cabin infested with bugs. let alone taking my wife and friends.

once or twice a year, as part of regular cabin maintenance. spray the perimeter(outside) of the cabin with permethrin. i buy the concentrate and then dilute myself.

keeps carpenter ants and all bugs away. and its safe.
