Looking for a squirrel
Hey all. I am not a trapper but I am interested in obtaining a squirrel. I have read the trapping regulations and it says that it is unlawful to sell fur to anybody but a fur dealer. I have a few questions. Does that mean that it cannot be given away as well? Also, does that only include red squirrels? Are there any specific regulations for grey squirrels? I really want to do a taxidermy mount of a grey squirrel and I was hoping somebody on here could provide one or could give me info on how I might get one.
Thanks

Pretty sure you can kill grey squirrels without a trapping license, might be wrong. They are invasive. Trappers don't trap grey squirrels unless they are a nuisance. Only red squirrels are used for their pelt.

Gray squirrels are classed as pest and non native, they are not protected in any way.
Red squirrels are classed as fur bearing and may only be taken by a licensed trapper, however, you could get a resident trappers license which would allow you to take Red Squirrel on private land.
I don't believe a trapper could sell you a raw pelt, but they could sell you a tanned pelt.

There are a ton of fat grey squirrels in Calgary. You could probably snare one in your own backyard.

Tons of grey squirrels - and their all-black colour phase - in Calgary. If I recall correctly, they are decendents of some that escaped from the zoo.
Not so many in neighbourhoods with buried power lines, because they have to descend to the ground to get from place to place and they're caught in the open by coyotes and cats.

As of 2011 people without a trapping license may hunt
But not trap red squirrel on private land.
