Default 165 grain

Hey everyone.

I was advised that a sprg 30-06 and a 165grain is good enough for nearlly everything i want to hunt, elk, moose, deer, sheep.

Now i only really trust you guys on here because everyone his seems to have a wealth of knowkedge.

Anyone care to confirm/deny this or add their 2 cents?

Was my favorite weight when I had a 06. Proper bullet construction and that slug will do just fine.

All I ever shot when I had an 06. Good balance between 150 and 180 grains.

This is where the 165gr pill shines.
Fined a well constructed high quality pill like the partition etc that groups well and don't look back.

If they shoot well in your rifle, they are the ultimate compromise for bullet weight.

FWIW: I’ve had excellent results in 2 different 30-06’s with Sierra Gameking 165’s. Antelope, deer and moose have all been taken without a single complaint from those critters.

I am using 150 gr Barnes TTSX in my 30-06.
150 gr bullet seems to be best choice for this cartridge and here is why:

http://www.gsgroup.co.za/articlemomentum.html

HV 150 gr from GS custom bullets is pushed at 3150 ft/sec from 30-06.
My 150 TTSX has MV 3000ft/sec.
I did not have access to GS HV bullets when I've developed my loads and the closest in Canada was 150 gr Barnes TTSX.

I’d recommend 165’s to anyone looking for a bullet for their30-06. It worked for me for years.

There are a lot of variables when it comes to a successful hunt. The 30.06 eliminates a lot of them and the 165 eliminates a lot of the rest. The only big one left is you. A well placed shot with that equipment and your next questions will be - how do I get it out and do I butcher it myself?

Default 165 gr Hornady BTSP 2900 FPS 30.06

Baby brother and I have been using this set up for everything from deer to bison.

It WILL NOT punch right through a big moose at 200 yards plus. Bullet will be stuck in the hide on the other side. It goes right through and is effective for anything closer and smaller.

Otherwise, it is more than adequate for anything here.

If I owned a 30-06 with 165gr pills I could probably sell about 20 other rifles. This is the reason I don’t own a 30-06.

With modern bullets the construction in the 06 is really more important than grain IMO . When only soft tipped bullets were available grain weight was more of an issue. Whatever you choose will work fine. For example, I would not hesitate to use a Barnes TTSX 150 grain on moose in 06.

My personal preference is the 180 grain in 06 as it you can take advantage of the extra powder capacity over the 308. It's really just splitting hairs though.

And there are a few dozen other cartridges, that you could say the same about. I am down to one big game cartridge that works well on all big game, and it isn't a 30-06.

I enjoy shooting 165-168’s out of my .308, they’re a great bullet weight. I wouldn’t have a problem shooting an elk/ moose or smaller big game with them. Dropped a black bear and a deer with this rifle ammo combo. Have taken it out for moose but didn’t see a moose... lucky moose.

At the moment I shoot factory 150 grains from my 06. They work great, dropped a couple deer one shot each last couple years. Even at further distances than I normally hunt. 256 yards was the last and longest shot one. I’m just saving brass to reload, but I think I’ll reload 180’s when I do because I have a few other rifles that shoot 150 grain area.

That will kill anything out there, I would choose a solid constructed bullet for lager game with that weight, due to the limited sectional density, like a bonded or partition bullet.

I own a 30-06 and have handloaded 165gr pills for 30 years. It is the reason I don't own another 20 rifles.

I use the 165gr Accubonds and find them more than adequate and do not have any complaints other than finding them when you are getting low.
