Not at all. Please let us see what you can do with your reloads. Just post your rifle and ingredients brass, primers, powder etc. The more info the better.

I'd love to see the difference between the best factory ammo and the best reload you have.

Thanks. I hope to upgrade the scope soon and make it a little tighter. Next will be to start reloading. For someone calling predators I think this is an amazing rifle. I use this with my Stoeger m3500 12 ga and they make a great combo. I have been also contemplating giving the tikka a new snow camo stock.

I for one know that most Savage rifles are an interesting blend of tupperware and steel and in spite of this or because of this shoot quite well......................but they are still Savage Ugly.

I agree that the savages do shoot well. I am anti-savage just because my buddy likes them 😜 That said his model 12 came factory in a Boyd's with thumbhole and looks not to bad at all.

Let's see your target and weapon of choice covey.

I wish I could get involved but I do not have a rifle of choice or a caliber for that matter. I have a different rifle and usually a different caliber every second hunting season for the last 25 years. Last year I had a model 70 F wt. in 7-08.
It did not shoot as well as I would have liked and after 2 season I let it go. Scored on game both seasons with that M70. I am sort of the restless type and sell guns part time and get lots of factory deals. This year I got another 7-08, this time a Sako A-7 that I topped with a Vortex Diamond back. It was shooting well under an inch at 100 with 140 grain ballistic silver tips. I zeroed it at 200 and took it hunting. Sorry, but no photos of how it grouped but I did get a photo two holes through the rib of a mule buck at 200. About 1/8 inch apart. I do not expect to do any shooting till spring arrives and if I shoot that 7-08 again before I buy something else I will post to this thread.

I wish I could get more shooting and less talkin but in recent years I have become a fair weather shooter. When the weather changes I will have less time to talk.

I like to read these threads and I could not resist saying something about Savage. BTW I have a BTVSS in .22 that I really like.

Turns out that I have had several Savage rifles in my ownersip. I'vve always wondered what this "ugly" description meant. I no longer have a Savage but I never did find them that ugly, especially the 11's. Is it the barrel nut? other manufacturers have adopted that method.

I may have seen a few of those? IIRC a couple Stevens 200s in 7-08, a Savage 16 270 WSM and an AXIS 7-08. Now I know that most of these rifles shot very well for you, but I must be getting old because I don't remember any that I would describe otherwise.

Just bought a Win XPR 30-06 before Xmas. I too shoot reloads but I'll pick up a box of factories to be fair.
Details and range results to follow in the next couple of weeks.

^I agree gitrdun. I'm a Savage fan (centerfire only) based on performance alone. Pretty much every OTHER make of centerfire bolt gun I've used had better fit/finish (SAKO, Tikka, Remington 700s, Ruger, Browning) than my Savage 10s, but none of them have shot any better. In my hands anyway. That could be chalked-up to the amount of trigger time I've had on my Savage vs. the others, but mine have been very accurate guns.

I haven't done any target shooting @ 300 yards (unless you call groundhogs "targets" ) but plan to this spring now that I have a decent scope on my .223. However, for some reason.. I simply hate thread titles that include "PROVE IT" in them..so the results won't be posted~good OR bad. I know the gun was minute-of-groundhog-head @ 300 yards with a lesser scope and that's about a 5" x 3" target. Good enough for me.

Shot this Jan 24 before the wind started up. Distance 328yds.
The rifle is a Vanguard S2 in 223Rem. I paid less than $600 for it 3 years ago.
The scope is a Nikon 3-12 x42. I paid about $450 for it 3 years ago.
Rings are Burris Signature Zee and the bases are Burris xtr. I dug them out of my tupperware container of extra stuff. Might be $100.
The rifle is as stock as they come.

The ammunition used is handloaded, but there has been zero load development done for this rifle. The load is one that has worked well in several rifles. Usually, I will use this recipe as a starting point for a rifle, adjusting the oal and grains of powder in order to achieve a better level of speed and accuacy. But, I only use this rifle as a 'range gun', so I just checked to see if the load gave ok performance. The cases are full length sized and the oal is SAAMI spec. Pretty sure that if I played with the load, things would tighten up up a bit.

The 'rithmetic.
2.11 / 3.28 / 1.047 = 0.61 moa

The gun.

The group.

Disclaimer. I tried this challenge 3 times. I succeeded twice and just missed out the other time. For a calm day, the results would be typical for this gun. This group was the best of the 3.

What's your pet loads for those bergers? Put up a 5 round target at 300. Let's see what it can do. 🙂

Well thought I might try a coyote hunt tomorrow or monday and remembered I had one sitting around that hadn't seen some sun for 1.1/2 years or so. I had "broke" that barrel in with a box of factory ammo then was bored a few months later and did up some mid range reloads and put 10 through mostly to see if they'd go bang.
Today was +1 or so with 30k wind from my 10 o'clock, I learned a bit about drop and wind drift today with about 9" drop and 9" drift. I was holding on top left target and hit low right. Lower left group is at 100 and seemed good so backed up to 300 and let fly. This is my only 300yd group so guess it's my best, gun has about 45rounds though it now. Thought I'd post then have something to improve upon, group is ok, 1/2 was probably me and/or the load and 1/2 wind. The 3 close ones are 2" though

Disregard middle target group, was getting a new to me 6mm on paper.

Photobucket don't seem to friendly right now so you get 2 posts with attachments purchased 3-4yrs ago.

Rem 700 VTR Atacs 223 - cost 679 on sale
Vortex viper 6.5-20x44 mil-dot - cost 359 on sale
Trijicon rings - 129 / Burris XTR 2piece bases - 18 I think
Bipod and sling were also on sale - 40 and 20
Ammo - Fed 50gr JHP 50pack, 30 bucks on sale.

I was trying to rig up a varmit/target gun and something for kids to shoot, and a bit around 1200 all in, was close but splurged on the rings and really like them. I think just the bare rifle nowadays might be close to 1200.
