Default Calgary Area Gunsmiths

Looking for recommendations for a Calgary area gunsmith to rebarrel my Pre-64 mdl 70. All I want is to rebarrel the action (currently in .30-06) with something a little smaller like .260AI or something else.

I don't want to spend $1000 rebarreling this action, I was hoping for under $500 actually. Is this a realistic #?

I'm open to calibers to rechamber this rifle in too. Opinions welcome.

Talk to Chuck, a pre-64 M70 should be sent to the right smith - not the closest one (in my opinion). Price depends many things - what exactly needs to be done, whether or not you supply the barrel etc.

As for calibers, I personally wouldnt go to a '08 bases cartridge, but rather something a bit longer 6mm, 257Roberts, 7X57, 25-06, 280 etc. You want a 6.5, try the 6.5-06.

A 6.5x284 would be a good option for that action. I'll tell you the name of an excellent smith after he finishes my rifle

You'll probably be looking at closer to $600-700 for a rebarrel job, if you plan on using a premium barrel like a Krieger, RKS, etc.

Bill Leeper, Dennis Sorensen, and Jan Kolabrander are on the short list.

Jan Kolabrander: Can't find a contact # for him
Dennis Sorensen: Not accepting work until Sept 1st
Bill Leeper: Unable to contact; calls went to a voicemail box and I couldn't understand what the lady was saying.

Turns out getting a rifle rebarreled is very difficult to get done. The gunsmith at Shooters Edge told me he's too busy to accept rebarrel jobs and doesn't want to spend the $ tooling up for them.

I think this is going to be like most things in life: I'll have to learn how to do it myself.
