Tempting
I wasn't going to go out since I don't fancy a thousand decoys but that might be worth it. I've got family around Chipman where I've seen Snows before and family north of Lloyd. Might be worth it.

I have a friend who goes down south every winter to hunt snows
He told me that a flock can wipe out a whole winter wheat field in 45 minutes!!
No bag limits and no daily or possession limits .

The only reason that it wouldn't interest me, is that I don't want to clean, or eat that many geese.

That is a pure varmint hunt , waterfowl cull IMO
It would be in the same context as a fun job for me , not an enjoyable sport hunt .
Lots of clean up, lots of wounded to dispatch with a club or machete .

Tony Vandermore just put up a 400+ bird shoot a couple of wks ago, lots of 100 and a few 200+ shoots happening down there this last couple of wks, that I've seen posted.

FT job
That actually doesn't even look fun. Just unloding on a flock like that is a good way I suppose of filling them but man there's a **** ton of work afterwards. there are a lot of cripples in there and a lot of picking up lol.
I'm not afraid of work but I'm happy with my limit allowed here in Alberta and I'm fine with the 3 shots as it allows for more time with friends in the field and a better experience as this is just a Full time job lol. Any dogs need some workouts. ....

Can still do just fine with the 3 shots. I managed to get a good sneak on snows this fall that got me 11 birds with just 2 shots from my over under. Like others said lots of cripples to dispach. As much as it looks like a simple show up and shoot situation it is far from it. With that many eyes watching for you it is hard to sneak up. For the amount of time and effort it takes i would way rather shoot over decoys.

Ya, too many birds to clean for this kid. There is something about the ̣l Hiawatha sneak on a field though, it just has to be tried once in a while.

What a mess...a mess of birds that is.
Dont know what would be harder the cleanin up of the crippes or the cleaning of the birds afterwards?
Thanks for sharing,
Rob

I was looking forward to a mid March snow geese opening but as I'm a new hunter and also new to Alberta, I just found out that up here in the Peace River area snow geese apparently don't really come down. Does anyone know what the closest area to me is that has some, and would anyone be willing to hunt with me as I don't know those areas?
I was really looking forward to putting some snow geese in my freezer and the wife was going to stew them up and can them, I even bought a case of 250 x #2 steel shells just for it!

I'd love to do a snow shoot. But I'd limit myself to 8 birds. It's all I need.
Those that want to fill a pickup bed are welcome too. It's just not my thing.

As I said earlier it is probably a depredation cull situation for most farmers down there , not so much a sport hunt.
The danged things are not only eating themselves out of house and home in the tundra but do untold damage Down south , much like the elephant problem of wiping out everything in many locales in Africa

And if there are that many cripples left on the ground, how many cripples flew away?

It's sort of the opposite of what most of us were taught....but entirely necessary from a management perspective. Much like buffalo jumps. Not a pretty picture, but the right thing to do at the time.
Why did the Canadian govt not move on getting rid of limits and shotgun capacity regs? Isn't the migratory bird act a federal matter?

Completely understand the necessity to control the population of these geese. 25 years ago I'd be there. Today I just don't feel the same. Still enjoy the hunt and taking a few birds though. I don't begrudge those who want to do this type of hunt I'm thinking it more the videoing and displaying of the video. Much like the bear hunter who speared the black bear. Perfectly legal, video it for your own enjoyment
Antis don't understand hunting or conservation and these videos don't do anything to help hunters who do.

Understood. I never meant to insinuate that you would video or if you did post it on the internet.
I think we share a lot of the same ethics when it comes to harvesting game.

Some things are better left un documented.
This video doesn't paint hunting in a very good light, IMO.
Think before posting for the whole world to see should be the new mantra.
FWIW: I get the whole cull the population aspect, but realistically if there were 6 shooters and the downed 280 birds in that one volley, that's around 47 birds per shooter. What in blue blazes are you gonna do with that many birds at one time, and I suspect that more than one of these culls will happen with this crew. It sort of reminds me of the shrimp discussion between Bubba and Forest in Forest Gump. Roast goose, fried goose, goose stew, goose ragu, deep fried goose, goose stir fry, goose pot pie, goose burger, goose.....................

Its a cool video and easy to misinterperate. Its a shame though that the population has been left to get this size as we get the bad end of the stick for doing something helpful. Hopefully this spring ill get to do my part if i can get someone to show me the ropes.

It's not a hunt that I would be interested in participating in, , but I do understand the reason for the cull.

I did not enjoy it either. Too many cripples and I wonder how many cripples flew off? For me this is not hunting but a flock shooting cull pure and simple.
The number of snows is a problem and someone has to do it. I hope the meat is not wasted. I hope that this approach will have the desired result.
