Default Homemade fur projects

With the exception of coyote the past couple years I have a hard time sending some fur to auction. $20 beaver??? give me a break. For the work that goes into them I thought I'd try home tanning one.....brain tanning and smoking to be exact. One turned to 5, etc. I sent 20 coyotes to auction, but had a couple with large exit wounds (from hunting) that I tanned as well. Other than a lot of elbow grease it turned out to be much more simple then I thought. Anyways, I ventured onto the world wide web, found a few patterns, had an akward first hand experience at Fabricland and eventually did a bit of sewing by hand. A few empty wobbly pops and late nights and here are a few of the results. I have to say it is very rewarding going to check steel wearing mitts you've made yourself.

I used this pattern when i did mine pretty good one also ...beavers are not an easy home tan
Tho they do come out fairy pliable but nothing like a profesionaly done hide with the right machines to shave the hide thin

Good for you Camdec. I am also planning on tanning my fur. I don't trap that many anyways, and I do it mostly just to get out there. You have a lot more things you can do with your fur once it's tanned, and it's much easier to sell.

Default fur mittens and hats

I had a trapline years ago and the beaver kits at that time were of little value so I would tan them and make mitts and hats, my brother still has a pair, 30 years old they are and still warm. Good work!
