Default 17 HMR V-Max Accuracy

I recently bought a Stevens m310 in 17HMR and now that I've had it to the range a few times I'm noticing a strange lack of accuracy with V-MAX loads. I'm able to get sub 1" groups at 50 yds pretty easily but when I move the target out to 100 yards it opens up to 6+ inches with Hornday and Federal ammo.

If I use the 17g JHP TNT ammo from Federal I amble able to get 1.25 inch groups regularly at 100 yards. For some reason its just the plastic tipped v-MAX that does this.

Does anyone have any ideas why this might be happening?

It appears that your rifle simply doesn't like the v-max. My own 17HMR averages around 3/4" for five shots at 100 yards with the v-max.

My Marlin really only likes the Hornady either the 17 or 20 grain. I tried Winchester, Federal and CCI and none shot as well. No rhyme or reason I can see, probably just a slight manufacturing difference that makes it match the barrel a bit better.

Default 17 hmr

My Savage likes the 17 gr. V-max the best but the 17 gr. CCI are a little cheaper but not as accuate as the hornady's. It hated the winchesters.

My savage shoots the 17gr better than the 20 gr, and I have not noticed much difference between the brands.

My Marlin likes the 17gr better than the heavier bullets, and it seems to shoot the Hornady better.

Same here - scary accurate with the 17gr v-max.

To the OP: some guns don't like some ammo. That's just how it goes!

My savage does not care what brand or weight ( I have not tried the 15 grain )
3/4 inch at a hundred yards all day long

My savage won't shoot the 15's, 17's ok, but the 20's are a laser!!!! I prefer the tnt's the best.

My Savage shoots the 17's better (0.699" @100m) than the 20's (.750"@100m). Both 10-shot groups. It will only do it with hornady ammo though.
