Default Modern Muzzle Loaders

Looking at picking up one of the modern day muzzle loaders. Hoping to spend less than 700.00 with a scope. What are everyone's preference for a first MML?

I have a CVA Wolf. Shoots 1.5" groups at 100 meters with 100 grains of "White hots" and 245 grain hollowpoint powerbelts.

VERY happy with it

All the cool kids are shooting big bore air rifles. Muzzle loaders are old news.

old indeed Anything but Traditions IMHO. Check out the lower end TC's, great workmanship and very accurate. A few I recommend:

Stay away from scope/rifle combo's the scope is almost always is awful. Throw on a Bushnell 3200 and you're set!

Grab yourself any TC, but most importantly, Blackhorn 209 powder, federal 209A primers, and Barnes 250 or 290 TEZ bullets.

Savage is the only commercially and easily availabe one that rates theirs for smokeless powder. If you want the ML experience without all the extra cleaning and bad smells, it is the one. You can also shoot real Black Powder or any of the substitutes in it.

Default TC

Only thing with the newer QL feature where TC counter bored the muzzle for quicker reloading is it also screwed the accuracy. Some guys cut it off and re-crowned.Accuracy restored as the factory did them crooked! i think TC has since discontinued this feature................Harold

i thought there was another company offering a model that will take smokeless? also, i thought that savage stopped producing the ML10?

i have one and would never trade it for that reason. i do most of my hunting a long way from home, and not having to go through the hassle of cleaning it in a trailer in november with no running water is a huge advantage for me. in typical savage fashion it is a little ugly, but then most muzzies are, so it fits in with the crowd.

My son and I Picked up a couple Used Savage model 10ML II this year and love them, we haven't shot anything with them but have done a lot of range shooting with them and they are very accurate (5 shot In a 3 inch group all day long) I'm sure looking forward to put a 300 grain hornity into the shoulder of a bull moose this year.. Good luck

Jim...

Guess I gotta ask...so an In-line muzzle loader with a scope that handles smokeless powder is everyones idea of a primitive weapon???...just wondering.....

Not my idea Hal. Give me a percussion cap or rock lock Hawken with iron sights and Goex 3F Black powder with a patched ball or a maxi., and keep my animals under 70 yards.

I bought a cheap Traditions Thunder Bolt. It shoots fine, and I fitted it with a cheap BP scope from Bass Pro. The only issue with the scope is it gets coated with powder residue, so keep that in mind when spending money on a scope. I think both rifle and scope were under $300 with 20 rounds of bullets and a package of powder. I did buy another ram rod as the one with the rifle is a bit cheap.

I bought it so I could use it in the early season. Have yet to take it hunting. But it is fun to shoot. Not sure how the old soldiers could get 3 shots off a minute, as this takes me some time to load, even using sabots and triple 7 pellets. It does give good groupings, but usually all I shoot is the gong, as it makes a unique sound when hit.

Don't forget the bullet drop comp/range finder built into the scope.

I've had three encores with the QL feature, they were all shooters. Maybe I was just very lucky.

I have a buddy that owns a traditions in-line.
For the price difference I could have bought two for what my Encore cost.

It seems to shoot just as well as mine.
Unless you want to switch out barrels....which are pretty dear to... some of the cheaper in-lines are worth looking at.

Im pretty surprised no one mentionned the real modern muzzle loaders such as the CVA Apex... i love how some new muzzle loaders comes with the option to switch the barrell for any rifle calibers.. 7mm-08, 300 win mag are my favorite for a day at the range, cheap price but superior quality.

I shoot a Traditions Pursuit II XLT. I have taken two animals with it and have zero complaints. Easy to clean as well. I shoot 150gr. Pyrodex with 250gr. TC shockwaves.

I also prefure a compound bow over a long bow!!! I plan on using my smokeless muzzleloader during the rifle season, so I guess I am still at a disadvantage..

Default Savage

There were several accidental blowups concerning smokeless powder.I think liability had more than a little to do with them being discontinued......by the way in-lines are primitive as they have been around since the 1600's ...Harold

Default TC Triumph

I went with the TC Triumph 50 cal for my first smoke pole. It laid three WT low in the first year I used it. I prefer to use triple 7 powder in weighed loads to develop a load to hunt with.(vs using 50 grain pellets) I follow the same logic as with loading for my centerfires. The 250 gr Barnes,SSTs and TC bullets all shoot well. I put a 175 yard limit on my shots. Just experiment and practice till you get it right.
