Grizzly bear shooting results in fines.
The grizzly was shot two years ago and court finally concluded. Quite the story on how it went down. Best to know and trust who you are hunting with.

Scumbag lawyer suggesting the one guy is somewhat responsible for the dead grizz because he took his deer back and put it back on the meat pole.
Ya ok, its his fault. Anything to get your client off or a lighter sentence. Brutal.

You'd hope being in camp after 10 there wasn't also a little hooch involved. Might have lessened some better judgement.

Unbelievable
Should be banned from hunting for life ! Shoot a bear in defence cause it charged you is ok ! This story is unbelievable! Actually think thay should have served some serious jail time to send a message to all poachers,

This incident was "out of character" for the two convicted as per their lawyer. Of course it was because they got caught....Lol
Crappy situation to be put into by his "friends"....

Could shooting that Grizzly be classified as protecting your meat? I haven't looked into the regs on that.

If a grizz mauls your deer , could the deer be considered “Jagged Meat”. ?

Defending or protecting your meat isn’t a valid reason for shooting a grizzly bear.
Depending on the judge, he/she might take it as a mitigating factor in sentencing, but it’s definitely not a legal reason for shooting a grizzly.
Indigenous hunters can shoot them (but have to eat them). You can shoot them if you’re protecting a life. But that’s it.

"Fox pointed out warning shots are normally fired in the air, not toward the ground, and when the bear was discovered, it was hidden and left to rot."
Anyone else disagree about firing a warning shot into the air?

Yes maybe he wanted to shoot at the ground in front of the bear who's to say I wasn't there so I can tell you.

oh ya, i didnt mean it with regards to the hunter's intention. I just meant I disagree with the crown's statement that warning shots are generally fired into the air (when thinking back to my PAL course, and the case of the fellow in Ontario who fired warning shots after people firebombed his house).

Good to see there are some consequences for their actions, how they treated that new hunter was terrible. Can’t say I am sad about having one less grizzly wandering around sw Alberta, granted I’d want it to be done in a way that utilizes the animal.

Their warning shot claim is ridiculous.
Whether the shot was into the air or into the ground, the chances of it hitting the animal is very low, the chances of it killing the animal in one shot is astronomical.

Booze or no booze they were upset that the bear was taking there meat and they wanted revenge end of story. The minute they made a game plan to ambush the bear when it came back shows intent, not self defense. The whole he’s a good guy and made a bad call in the heat of moment means absolutely nothing, should have got more of a punishment then what they got especially for threatening the other hunter which shows there was no remorse on what they did. I agree with 35 whelen as well, warning shots in the air is a waste of time, shoot around them and make some dirt fly.

10-4 on that one. One hunting “buddy” I’d never need again.

This story has a "Deliverance" kind of feel to it ... plus a lot of shockingly poor judgment. Thanks to the participants for making "hunters" look so good.
