Default Cross fox or?

Is this a cross or is it just a dark red fox? There a number of dark fox like this in that immediate area of Northern Ab, I took this pic last fall.

Yep, that's a cross fox

They are a beautiful animal that has eluded me for my entire life. Seen them a few times but never in a shottable spot. I've also never been able to trap one

Seen a few black fox ( silver fox) in the mcbride area as well as grande cache. Never seen one with red highlights. A quick google search says they often cross breed as black( silver) is rare. Even litter mates are often one colour or the other. Hope I an understanding that correct.

Not cross breed just a colour mutation. Dominant and regressive gene thing! I've caught one nice cross fox!

They used to call that color a Superior Cross. Paid big money back in the 50s.
Typically they were worth ten times what a Red was worth, back in the day.

The term cross comes from the light pattern seen on the flanks and neck as it often forms a cross over the shoulders.

And it is as others have said, just another color variation of a Red Fox.

I've caught two in my life, but that was well after the Fox pelts dropped to nothing.
And neither was a superior cross. Close, but looked more like a really dirty red.
Sold them for around $10 dollars as I recall.

Keep in mind, there was zero Fox of any color in this area when I was young.
The first Fox I ever saw was east of Coddote lake in 1982. It was a classic Silver.
First one I tracked on my line was in 1985, caught my first Fox the following year, a Honey Red.

I've a couple of photos of dark Crosses and some real nice photos of a light cross just a mile from where I live now. I've seen a few more then I've photographed, but not a lot.

There still isn't all that many Foxes in the area. Not like down south. I think they have trouble competing with the Fisher, Marten, Coyotes and Wolves. There is no niche here for them to thrive in.

Saw a pair of these while hunting east of red deer. Couldn't bring myself to shoot them. Very cool animals.

Seen a couple on the mountain but always on land I couldn't hunt. I'm surprised there was that many around the lease in the hills. Only ever caught a few fox there and nothing of the "crossed" variety

You got to hang some snares to catch them Tork. Try it on your new line and you will hook up on one. They are a lot of them up north. Tricky to get in footholds. At least for me they are. Baitpiles and snares will get them if you can keep the wolves away

I get a few foxes a year in Lynx snares at bait piles. Just never been lucky enough to get a cross fox I guess. My buddy has snared a couple and shot a couple up here so I know they're around. Just not around me

Have you tried to use the cross fox call. It squeaks a little higher pitch than the Red fox Call........ lol
