Default Hit The Lottery Today

I've seen some cool things in the outdoors, but today I got to witness a moment that happens a lot but is seldom seen by people. I went out in the country to maybe pluck a shed, get the dogs some excercise and vaporize a gopher or two. I got all three goals accomplished but scored a bonus prize I couldn't have hoped for on purpose.

As I crested a small hill I saw a group of nine mule bucks just off the road. Two had shed both sides, one had one antler and 6 had both. The group saw me coming and walked away from the road as I approached. The one antlered dude walked with his head cocked to one side like he was off balance. He started shaking his head and I knew what was coming. I reached for my phone to try to get video of it, but that antler flipped into the air before I was ready. No video, but I did pick my first shed of the year. Look close and you can see the wet blood.

So I'm wondering if I can hit a jackpot twice in one day. I had my Savage Axis out to foonswap a few gophers and although I was 38 for 46, I know I can do better. The trigger on that sucker is just dismal. The vast majority of its shooting has been coyotes called to 50 yards or much less. For that I guess I don't notice the crappiness of the trigger, but on gophers from 150-200.....well that stiff junker just isn't the best. Now about 3 years ago a member from Medicine Hat offered to sell me a Rifle Basix trigger for that gun. Maybe it was Timney... either way, he had a replacement for a pretty good price. I'm hoping that guy sees this and contacts me. I was gonna call you, but somehow I deleted that pm, and never could remember who it was? I guess I'm not that fussy, if anyone else has one let me know please.

Good for you to see something that rare. Most of the bucks I've been watching still holding on to their head gear.

I lurk occasionally Fly.

I saw some pretty cool stuff last month too. Was working up around GP, and saw some wild boars. Please nobody flood my inbox. I picked a couple of known killers in the area to feed the info to. Haven't heard any good news from them yet, but last time I gave some pig info to forum members it resulted in some bacon in the ground. Silly buggers never posted pics here though....

I've never tried putting up a video here so let's see if this works. More cool stuff from Alberta's wild country...

I don't know if that's the best description of me.... I'm gonna be honest and tell you that I didn't work at all Jan or Feb, and finally got back at it this month....so I haven't had a chance to act on that particular PM about porkers. I wish I could. I've been asking around though, and haven't heard anyone come back with a solid sighting. I'm hoping in a couple weeks to wrap up my job, and then I'm going to go search where you pointed. And should I connect, I will be sending bacon your way! I have a good friend who is a FishnWildlife guy, so going to check with him on it, he'd have heard something for sure.

And nice score on that shed! Have never seen that happen myself.

Have you tried working on the trigger using the you tube video?
I did and it is 100% better, not perfect but better.
It was awhile back so I cannot remember which video it was.

Sounds like a great day. Must have been pretty cool to see that mulie fling is headgear off. I have always said how cool it would be to witness a buck or bull doing that. Awesome.

I recommend a Timney replacement. I have heard of people cutting springs and such in the Axis to lighten the pull. I dont think its a safe route.

Well, I ran up to my friends place where I hunt deer. Of course it snowed 5 inches the night before I arrived making that shed hunting trip an effort in futility. Shed count remains at one....but I got to yank a backwards calf out of a cow, milk a cow to bottle feed her twins until they get it figured out, jam some needles into a few and pretty much get covered in blood, snot and cow crap. My friend appreciated the help, and today on the way home I found an absolutely epic gopher patch. I'm talking infestation of biblical proportions. Ran out of ammo or I might still be there.

On the fox...I'm not quite as ninja as it seems with my fox whisperer technique. There is a family of five hanging out at an industrial site. The workers there have been going through 50 pounds of hotdogs a month for a year now. My ham and cheese was likely a nice treat, but not out of normal for that animal. Most of the time I prefer to leave wild animals wild, but these guys have been habituated to people for a while. They likely have not eaten a mouse for a long time.

Now about my trigger situation, I have done some adjustments already, but it's a lipstick on a pig kinda deal. It plain and simple sucks. I knew it was a long shot to find the guy that made me the offer, but worth a try. Off to the Google machine to order a new one I reckon. Thanks anyway fellers.
