Default Just curious

I was curious as to why some people hunt gophers and coyotes. I understand gophers so cattle don't break limbs and such and coyotes to protect herds etc, but is there any other reasons? Sport? Pelts?

Just an honest question, I'm just getting into hunting myself.

Feel free to pm the answers so it's not on the old inter web.

Gophers are just plain fun to shoot, coyotes are fun to hunt. Added bonus is they are both pests to farmers and ranchers.

Best way to practice shooting in the field plus helps control the populations. Two birds one stone

Unless you have witnessed it first hand, it's hard to believe just how much damage they can do to a canola field. One of the fields that I shot in las year had large patches , where the canola was pretty much wiped out.

There are drivers on our highways who swerve in order to not run over gophers. This is a very dangerous situation that can result it rollovers etc.

I shoot gophers in order to protect these people.

Not so much gophers, but reducing the coyote population will help increase the deer population or atleast reduce predation on them.

gophers are just fun to shoot and they help keep and sharpen shooting skills in the non hunting months. you cant get any better practice than moving targets at varying ranges. the other main bonus is that it helps gain trusting relationships with the local land owners when big game season rolls around.
forming good relationships also happens when out targeting coyotes.
personally i would rather be coyote hunting than deer hunting it is extremely challenging and rewarding at the same time. coyotes can be skinned and prepped or be sold whole for the fur trade. there is many more reasons that are often different between people and the only way to know for sure is to get out and experience it for yourself.

Default gophers

A few years back I actually got to shoot in a field that was so overrun with gophers the farmer actually re-seeded the field.

Coyotes will take calves right around this time of year. Every rancher has stories about calves lost to coyotes. Worst stories are those pulled from the mother while still giving birth.

Neighbor lady gave some guy permission to hunt coyotes on her place. Time came when she had a downer cow that needed shooting. Wouldn't do it, cause it was against his "Ethics". Guess who got the job ?

I like hunting coyotes and gophers. It's legal, fun and good shooting practice. Plus it gives me another reason to spend time outside.
