*** Northern Alberta Hay-Zama Bison Hunt Video ***
On this weeks episode, James and Rick head north to Zama City, Alberta to fill a once in a life time Bison tag. Accompanying them is Rod, a good friend of Ricks, who ran the camera. We were fortunate to tag out opening day of the 2015 Bison season. The draw percentage on the Zama Bison hunt is 0.54%, not even a 1% chance. That's 100 out of roughly 13,500 tags. Thanks for the great memories that will last a lifetime, Rick and Rod!

Enjoy the Video!

Great video and congratulations. I use to work up in that area and see bison a lot. Always wondered why there was no season back then.
Thanks for posting

No. We had planned for an 7-9 day hunt the first go around and if we didn't tag out then we were going back up. Long drive from lethbridge. Was a really hard hunt for most after the first opening week. Couldn't locate them because they were so pushed away from their normal hangout areas due to hunters and logging.

I just looked up Zama City on Google maps... the "city" label is seriously grandiose.
Anyway, glad to see Alberta-based shows, so I'll definitely have a watch.

Opening day. First one down by 1:30ish and second one about 4:30ish id say give or take. Had a line on 2 right outside zama but someone beat me to them opening morning.. so we went back on the herd inspotted a day before and just to find out guys were chasing them on snowmobiles...kinda discouraged at that point then as we were going out the same way we went in...to our surprise they pushed them right back to us...from where they were intially to where i shot was 3-4miles away of tracking them and trying to get ahead of them.

Congrats, thanks for sharing. I am not a fan of holding off when you had another clear shot to keep the cape nice though. I like to dispatch the animal as fast and humanely when possible. It appeared you did to but your cameraman kept you from doing so.Congrates again on a once in a lifetime tag!

until now i thought snowmobiles were a must for this hunt. But looks like it can be done with trucks.
has anyone else done this hunt without the use of snowmobiles and just using your truck?

Yes trucks where definitely doable this year because the weather is mild for that time of year. Who knows, next year could be -40 and 5 feet of snow. I think this year was an exception to most.
Jmac, who is doing your taxidermy job? When did you shoot your bison?

JB Taxidermy east of Calgary (Lyalta) is doing it, he does great work! Shot it in January a few years ago.

I used a .300 win mag on the beast. They are such huge animals that a guy doesnt need to keep blasting at them. There is so much blood pumping through them that even if i shot him again i dont think he would have died that much faster. Think how long an arrow would take to bring the beast down after a shot...im happy with my decision, plus it was so much to take in that moment of time. I couldnt believe my eyes that i was seeing this thing bed down after the shot... he tastes so so good!! Bison steaks for supper tonight!

Two holes is better than one for pretty obvious reasons especially on a "huge" animals. Also it a completely different impact and truma to bring in an broadhead impact. Glad he taste good, i would have no doubt put another round in him (depending on a clear vital shot) but to each their own.

X2, I would definitely put a 2nd round into that big guy, even though he was not gong anywhere with the herd right there.
Looks like a pretty cool hunt.
I would not recommend that philosophy on an elk in the bush or African game, you will never find your animal after it runs +500 yards.
As a guide, I tell my clients, if he is standing you keep shooting, to drop him in his tracks, the quickest kill possible.
As for the broadhead, if a good double lung shot is made, the animal is down under 15 seconds and stone dead under a minute.
