My condolences. That is a possibility that has scared me in the past with my mutt as well. You can't be on top of them at all times. Take it easy on yourself.

Thanks so much for all your kindnesses...
I will keep you posted if we find her...we just do not want her to stay under there. Not even that much bank where she could be, but the water is too high for chest waders in spots. Our friends, one a vet and one a CPS officer, both said that death would have been very quick, likely less than a minute before unconsciousness. The vet said drowning, more than any other accidental death, is in fact the quickest and least stressful to the body, although it may not seem like that when thinking about it. I take some small comfort from this, but the reel of her falling in keeps replaying in my mind.
If we have no luck today, he will bring his Zodiac out and tie it to the bank, and probe from there. I wish we had a friend who scuba dives, but we don't! And the Hublet won't let me go in there, roped up, as it is too cold.

So sorry. That's terrible. I hope you find her. I've been there. Dogs are important pieces of the family and a tragic loss is always harder than a planned one to old age. I wish I had something to say to comfort you guys in this difficult time. Sorry for your loss seems hollow.

Terrible accident, nothing you could do. Dogs run around. Thoughts are with you and your hubby Molly. Hope you find her soon. Take care.

Molly, I am at a loss of words of what to say.

Watching your dog disappear on you is absolutely heart breaking.

We almost lost our "Wilson" down an old farm well.

If you are trying to recover Beaner maybe a neighbor with a backhoe can be of help in tearing slabs of ice off of portions in the creek.

Take Care Molly.

This is why the fire departments are constantly reminding everyone to keep your dogs on a leash, you have a fighting chance of fishing them out or stopping them if they get too close to the water.

At this time of the year the ice is just so dangerous and unpredictable.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you as you grieve the loss of your four legged friend.

Thank you, FishingMOM. I guess leashes are something not often used when living on a ranch...Of course, they are a good idea, especially if one has a dog who loves to explore. I have always been leery of creeks, much more so than hubby. Bean sadly veered off to get a drink and chose the worst possible spot to do so. The image of her disappearing will be with us forever. If nothing else, this thread will remind everyone what can happen, and to take extra care of their dawg friends.

We just got back from more ice chopping. A backhoe was mentioned, but we have removed all the ice along the bank. There is a section in the middles of the creek and she could be wedged beneath it, so we have been working on that. Got too tired so came home...

All I can say is thank you for having the intestinal fortitude to post the loss of a pet in this manner. Accidents happen and one can read between the lines on what you and hublet are going through. Memories are lasting and she lived the good life while with you. Our condolences.

Sooo Sad.
Like others have said: don't be too hard on yourself.
A week running around off leash on a farm is often better than a lifetime leashed up somewhere else.
Thanks for posting, I'll be more cautious with my "best friend" around ice & creeks this spring.
So sorry for your loss.

I run my dogs near the river year round and it is always first on my mind. It can happen so fast.

A friend lost his lab one spring the exact same way.

Sorry for your loss.

Molly,

It looks like I may have tomorrow off work (things are slow this week). If I get the day off, can I come and help you and Jim look for Beaner?

PM sent,

Mac

Very sorry to hear of your loss and I hope Beaner is found.

I almost lost my pup to drowning, I was just able to grab her by the scruff and haul her out, if I would have missed her neck I would have lost her

My condolences...

Does anyone here have any experience in finding and recovering a body from under stream/creek ice?

Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Wish us luck,

Mac

Very sorry to hear this, have had it happen and no how it feels to find your dog. If the dog had a collar or tags on a metal detector may help. Best of luck.
