Unhappy Our Dawglet has Drowned...

I wanted to post this as I know there are so many caring dawg folks on here, and to be honest, I need kind words. Our Beaner fell through the ice in the creek yesterday, and she was gone, just like that. It was the deepest and worst part of the creek, and I guess she ran down for a drink, and we saw her over there, and just as we realized what could happen, she dropped through and was gone. She was pulled under the ice, and the water was up so no air pocket. We were beyond grief and in vain, poked holes with sticks, until we realized we could go through and drown ourselves.

Today, two friends came to help look for her body, which we think is pinned down there, and spent several hours chopping ice, while roped up and wearing rock climbing harnesses, and then we used a fish finder camera but the water is too murky. We do not think she floated downstream as the creek gets very shallow and she would likely hang up on something where we would see her. At least I hope so. We will go back tomorrow and look again.

Please be careful anywhere near ice at this time of year, hell, anytime of year...Bean was so full of life, would have been 7 this summer. We only had her two years...My quandary now is whether to tell her former papa, as I know he regretted giving her up and would be devastated. What would you do if you were me?

This house is a sad one, and she took up so much space in our hearts, it is so hard. And I know you understand. I just needed to share my grief.

Oh no, my condolences. I am very sorry for your loss...
Never easy, always seems a little worse when its not from old age...
I have lost several dogs, each time hurts more than the last...
Be proud of the life you gave her.

I would tell the "former papa" the truth, no point trying to keep any secrets.

My condolences Molly, sorry for your tragic loss. I almost lost my 1st Lab when she broke through the ice duck hunting. Luckily I was able to lay on the ice and stretch out far enough to grab her by the scruff of the neck before she went under. That was tramatic enough.

Default Sorry to hear

My heart goes out for you folks.
Not sure if I would tell the old owner unless we were close. More greiving folks would be sadder for everyone I suspect. Hope I don't find myself in your shoes.

My wife and I are terribly sorry for your loss, that's an awful lot to go through. Try and remember the good times.

And most important, stay safe if you continue looking for the body.

Sorry to hear that, Molly.

The creek that ran through our ranch claimed more than a few animals over the years. One of our dogs (a year and a bit old) fell in one spring at melt. He got caught in the sweepers and I jumped in and pulled him out. He wasn't breathing so I had to administer mouth-to-mouth (OK, mouth-to-nose). He lived, but he was never quite the same... couple pickles short of a barrel so to say. His mother drowned in the same creek a few years later.

Unhappy Dear Molly,

Though we never met Beaner, Linda and I are very saddened by this news.

Our thoughts and condolences go out, to both you and Jim.

Losing a dog is always tough, and it's much harder when it's sudden and traumatic. I've been there. Condolences.

Damn, that's a terrible thing to happen to your friend Molly. It's so hard to say goodbye, when you have the time to do it. When they are just snatched away like that....terrible. Deepest sympathy. TC
