Default Time change

Just a reminder for all, it's time to spring ahead! Also a good time to check your smoke detectors and change your furnace filters!

You're telling me. Every time it seems to take longer and longer for my sleeping pattern to adjust. I'm sure it has nothing to due with my hair starting to turn colour though. . .

Ah, the time change...

How can something that seems like it is always happening be so easy to forget?

We do have jurisdictions in Canada that do not partake in such changing of the clock. Other areas do yet have other strange time keeping aspects, such as Creston, B.C. for example. The town spends approximately half the year on Pacific time and the other half on mountain it seems. Like most things mankind tries to measure, time ends up a funny thing! Yet only when people think of it.

dewalt18 Thanks for the reminder! That's good advice to accompany it there, too.

I'm up now fixing a few client clustered environments. Time changes does funny things to IT systems.

This time of year when time springs forward, some activities beginning just before the shift look like they take 1 hour more than normal to process. Sometimes some automated tasks never happen (eg what happens to scheduled 2:30 AM scheduled task)

When time rolls back in the fall, we get the opposite. Some transactions look like they finish before they begin. Sometimes some automated jobs run twice eg 2:30 AM jobs

Some systems cope, some don't. It usually makes for a fun Sunday.

Why not just move all bloody clocks either back or forwards by 30mins and let's stop with this retarded bi-yearly clock tinkering already!

Saskatchewan has the right idea not observing DST.

Fortunately my sleeping habits are so out to lunch right now I didn't even notice

I like it. I really like it. In fact I like it so much I set my clock an hour earlier so I can get up and like it more!!!!

Without DST, you whiners would just sleep through another hour of daylight.

John Wayne likes DST.

I think it has lost any point it ever had, and should be abolished. It is just a trap for the uninformed and a mess for some IT systems. One fall indoor soccer system an entire team (all immigrants - EDSA has a number of such "nationality" based groups) forfeited our scheduled game because they showed up half an hour after start time, 2 days after the time change. Kind of hard to beleive that all 18-20 of them were unaware 2 days later, but there it is ...?
The original concept had some merit in the context of the times, but can anyone explain why it is a good idea in 2015?

Match it to sask time in hours and leave it. Now if we could set the year back to were sask is, we would really have it. Sask rocks!!!
It will save $1000 in overtime for nightshift staff

It's a natural for Wildrose. There is no mention of daylight savings time in the old OR new testament.

personally, I like it. Daylight at 4 a.m. is a waste. Nice to have it light later at night.

I'm with the natives there is no gain by changing times, every body change by 1/2 hour and leave it the same all year

Would Newfoundland still be a 1/2 hour different?

MLA Jacquie Fenske, who represents Fort Saskatchewan-Vegreville, has tabled a petition in the Alberta legislature asking the government to repeal the Daylight Saving Time Act:

And if John Oliver agrees, then I think its a no-brainer:

Cool Daylight Savings Time

I can take it, or leave it ... it doesn't bother me, either way. The world has much bigger fish to fry!

But for each individual province/state to decide to ditch it or not, seems pretty stupid to me (apologies to Saskatchewan ). The last thing we need is a patchwork of provinces and states on different times, all across North America. What a ridiculous nightmare that would be!

My two centavos,

Mac

Isn't that the very issues that caused standardization of time zones in the late 1800's around the time They built the cross country railroad?

I don't know where the government stands on this now but I think the way to frame the question is:

Do you want more sunlight in the evening - or in the morning?

One the longest day of the year (yes, I know that they are all 24 hours) the sun in Edmonton could either:

Rise at 4 am and set at 9 pm (no DST)

or

Rise at 5 am and set at 10 pm (with DST or SaskTime)

I'd appreciate my precious one hour of sunshine lot more from 9 to 10 pm than from 4 am to 5 am. And over the summer that's a lot more hours to my benefit than a whole bunch of hours when I'm either sleeping, ****ting, showering or shaving or thinking about the work day. (Now, if they'd change the standard work day hours, then that would work for me too.)

I like daylight savings time (or a shift to SaskTime) for this reason. I'm going to have a whole lot of darkness in the evenings no matter what through the year, so I want to maximize my sunshine while I can - summers seem short enough as it is.
