Default Lake O'Hara

Hey guys,

I'll be doing a trip to lake O'Hara this next summer and was wondering how the fishing is up there? I have done trips all through banff and jasper, but haven't been up there before.

Thanks so much,
Backyardhunter

The season doesn't generally open up there until the middle of July so don't go early. The lake and the outflow creek (Cataract Brook) can still produce some nice Cutties - despite Parks Canada's cancellation of native species stocking programs and the general lack of much support for angling. Don't get nailed without a permit - they're no longer very forgiving.

Is a tube good to have or is shore fishing great?

Do you have a bus ticket. The system is so annoying.

I think the bus tickets were all booked for the entire operating season within a few hours of the site opening up last spring. I hope they have fixed that issue - at least put it to the 3 months ahead of time like for the camping permits.

If you want to get up there to camp you better pencil in your days and call early in the morning the day it is 3 months lead.

Ya. I tried to book some spots first thing in the morning. I was on the second it opened. Couldn't get through the phone line then half hour later I did and it was all sold out. Heard that tour companies use tech to get all the tickets. Very few to average joe and jill.

Lake O'Hara has not been for the average Jill or Joe for a long time - unless you're the above average Jill or Joe hard core Alpine Club couple. Jill and Joe screwed up the alpine meadows with their random camping. It can cost Jill and Joe $1k a night to stay in a cabin at the lodge. Maybe it's a good thing they don't go there much anymore.
