Default Jerry Potts

I am currently reading "The Life and Times of Jerry Potts". I have heard of Jerry throughout my interest in the settlement of the west, north and south of the Medicine line. What a great character he was and a fine scout and guide.

Ole Jerry and many others of the time like to "pull a cork". I encourage everyone with an interest in history should read this fine book.

That book should be required reading in all Canadian schools.

Jerry Potts was the first, Tyrone and Henry are his descendants and highly respected RCMP officers as well.

I went " Jerry Potts Elementary School " in grades 5 & 6 here in Calgary .
It was a brand new school at the time. Learned lots about Jerry back then , but that's 40 + years ago. Don't remember to much any more , other than he was certainly a ...unique character. Got to figure it would have been a hard life.

I have it plus, "Jerry Potts, Paladin of the Plains" and "Jerry Potts, Frontiersman and Hero".

Every Canadian would know who Jerry Potts was if Canada had the Dime Novel writers of the day and if we had Hollywood to to promote him in movies. In real life, he made Buffalo Bill look like an amateur.

Evidently a man of few words and concise vocabulary. Asked what was over a certain hill, he replied, another hill.

Some people felt that Jerry as an interpreter was questionable at times. One time when Jerry was asked to translate a long english paragraph to the FN he summed up the whole translation into one short sentence. Other than that, he lived an interesting life.

Potts was an excellent 'distiller' of white man's words ... only the important parts got passed along

Default Wow

I have an interest in such, but have only seen a couple of off-hand references to him in my reading on the times. Think I will get the book. He was one tough (and smart?) SOB.
