share for the landowner

Deer in every direction around my place but never in my field all open hay fields so I'll be asking a couple of my neighbours for access, hell i saw a herd of 5 white tails and a pretty decent buck exactly a mile away this evening. But anyways here's the question: If you're hunting someone else's land who here gives them a share (I certainly intend to) and how much?

If you offer any reward in exchange for permission, that would be illegal. However, if you give a gift after the fact, that was not part of any negotiation for permission, that would not be a violation

About 30 years ago I went hunting elk near Cardston AB. During each morning scouting trip I could hear gun shots that occurred between farm yards and mountains. I could see groups of elk heading back to the mountains. I stopped at various farmyards asking how hunters are getting to those elk. About the last day of the hunt I stopped at a farm yard and said to the rancher that the hunters have to be going through his yard. He hummed and hesitated then he said he does not allow hunting but he has a 'Recreational Land Use Fee' . I was puzzled at his response and left. The next morning while back in the area listening to gunshots the bells rang. I went to his place and asked what was the fee for recreating on his land. He said $300 for a cow and $100/point for a bull.

I was not aware of paid access laws since I'd normally be on crown land up north, learned something new today.

Taking a box of Belgian Chocolates to your landowner friend, as we do, is not paying for access.
Straight forward, unsolicited gifts to a host are very different than a negotiated price.

In my experience farmers don't want fresh meat, but if you bring sausages or jerky it will be most welcome. I'm so confident this doesn't constitute paid access I'm posting about it publicly.

I always show my thanks by taking out Christmas Baking and a handful of sausage to show my respect appreciation to the landowners who are kind enough to shar their land with myself.

The home made baking is a personal touch and its a bit less the baking the landowners wife might have to do for Christmas

Last year, to say thanks for the access for my sons moose tag, the land owners got a hand shake, a thank you card, Cookies by George gift boxes and a timmies card. Was a real hit. When delivering them I found out who likes wild meat so they got some K&K treats too.

I forgot about that. I used to drop off a tin of homemade cookies, squares and butter tarts. It's been awhile since I have hunted private land though. 😀
