Some Cartridges Don’t Fit

What kind of brass. Are they all the same make?

I am careful with FL dies to lube the inside of the case neck to allow the stem to pull out easily and not cause any stretching.

Have since gone to Lee collets and Redding body dies for sizing. No issues.

The sizing die gets setup different then the seating die, read the instructions again. You likely have the seating die threaded down till it touches the shell holder.

I thinking this is the issue as well.
I had a .242 WSSM that was very finicky.

Hey Dean, I coloured an entire cartridge with sharpie and can only see the tiniest marking on the shoulder. It took some force to get the bolt closed but it didn’t make much of a mark on the colouring. Thoughts?

In that case it is not the bullet being too long, take a look at your die set ups .

Best bet is to find an experienced hand loader near you and invite them over so you can put your collective heads together and figure it out.

Assuming you have trimmed all your brass to the same length, and that you have your sizing die adjusted properly, then my guess would be that the expander ball on the depriming pin is dragging and pulling the shoulder up on some of the cases as you are finishing the process. Are you getting any resistance or squeaking sounds as you pull the depriming stem back through the neck on extraction of the expander ball. Are you doing a light lube of the INSIDE of the neck on every case before sizing?

I would verify if the die is hard against the shellholder with the lever down, and a case in the die. I have seen several cases where the press flexed a tiny bit, and the doe didn't bottom on the shellholder under load.

Setting FL dies to a particular, pre determined, standard makes it tough to get results that are anywhere near perfect for a given chamber. Die brand, and individual die make up are all over the map. Redding FL dies, for example would need a hard cam over to fit a chamber that, say, Whidden dies would be no where near the shell holder to get the same result. I have a half a dozen sizing die’s for the 30-06 as an example. Each one of the sizes brass differently. And brass brand can have a huge affect as well. Depending on the brass I’ll use different die’s for the same rifle.

Turn your die down in extremely small increments until the brass chambers. If you don’t have enough room to make this work, you may need an equipment change.

On more than one occasion I have machined shell holders down a few thousandths so brass can be sized a little more .
