Default pike/laker rod

Hey guys,

going to need some advice here. Will be in the market for a new pike rod for an upcoming adventure. I have the 7wt fly rod, which is fine for the smaller guys, but I need a rod for some trophy pike.

With a rod, of course will come a reel.

This combo will hopefully serve me well for river fishing in bc, as well as getting into the 15 lb+ pike and lakers. Pretty sure I'd want a spin setup for this, but open to whatever you 'more experienced' anglers would recommend.

Thanks in advance! Slivers

What's your budget?

Like BeeGuy asked, will you be shore fishing, or fishing from a boat?

How do you feel about levelwind reels?

Will it be used about 50/50 pike/lakers or more pike than lakers etc.?

I recommend a med/ heavy 7- 7'6" casting rod, and a quality bait caster.
Don't forget the line. Try out the new Sufix 832 ghost braid. 20 or 30 pound.

great feedback guys

Some answers -

No beeguy, no secret spot, but a monster trip being planned.
chubb - as far as 'bc' goes, I am planning on fishing a few of the mighty interior rivers, and hitting up the tail end of the salmon run this year near Kamloops or Vernon.

This year I will have access to a boat at times as a friend has one and wants to get out more this year, but for the most part unless I pair up with someone, I will be a lonesome fisherman on the shore drinkin mountain dew and eating dill pickle chips

I still don't know a helluva lot about reels and things like that, so just looking for some feedback on what people like.

Chubb, a trial run would be great if you want to get out sometime that'd be fun

Lakers would be a couple trips to minnewanka this year, and perhaps a big one up north late in the season / early next year.

There are a lot of combos and brands which fit your description, but you asked what we are using, so for a situation you described I would use my quantum PT med/heavy 6'6" rod with my Quantum PT40 reel. This is a very light but very durable set up. I have 20lb fireline and use this set up for Lakers at Cold Lake, Monster pike at Wabamun, and what ever I can drag out of the river. So far nothing but Awsome performance, smooth action and for feeling like having almost nothing in my hands....very strong with no problems hauling big fish to the net or river bank. I love the titanium alloy bail on the reel, no matter what you do it always just springs back to original shape. I also love the bail Magnetic Locking system so there aren't any springs to foil up or weaken. Any way that's what I use and have put through the paces. Again there are lots of great combos, head go TFH play with some gear and see what fits! But that would be my personal choice. Have a great trip!

I've got a set up to show you that will do everything you'd want it for. It would be your go to rod for bigger species and you'd use it a lot.

I use an 8'6" MH/Fast Shimano Clarus salmon/steelhead rod on the NSR a lot and it would likely fit the bill. Lots of backbone for the big fish but with a reasonably soft tip. It may be a little long for some situations, but you'd be able to toss big heavy pike lures from shore like a mofo!

I had mine paired up with a Shimano Corvalus and it's treated me well so far

7" medium mh shimano clarus spinning rod teamed up with a decent (shimano symetre-ish) size 2500-3000 reel will be plenty for any pike or lake trout.

You could use the 3000 size reel and a 8'6" shimano clarus spinning rod as well.

I've pulled 30+ lb lake sturgeon from the NSR with that setup chucking 3oz pyramid sinkers and pickeral rigs.

I'ved fished shimano clarus rods almost exclusively(spin/bait rods) ever since i purchased my 8'6'' med/fast action steelhead rod 15 years ago, caught everything from juvenile salmon less than 2 inchs long to 35 pound plus chinook salmon and EVERYTHING in between, sockeye, coho, chum and pink salmon as well as pike, walleye, rainbows, browns, cutties, brookies, whitefish and so much more...and the feel is always silky smooth.

I also own a 6'6'' med action clarus(sometimes 8'6'' is to much) and a 5'6'' ultra light fast action clarus all matched with shimano stradic reels.

Then theres the baitcasters a 6'6'' med action shimano clarus casting rod and a 10'6'' shimano west coast series casting rod that share use of a shimano calcutta baitcast reel.

All amazing highly recommendable and modesty affordable set ups, i fish the 8'6'' clarus EVERWHERE for ANYTHING, when i'm not chucking flies or its not too long, i believe the rod still retails at about $100, so much bang for the buck its rediculous. Happy shopping.

Hey slivers, remember if you set your rod down put your foot on it, especially if you just spooled it up with new braid I think the fish have more of your gear than you do so far!

I just built a new pike/salt***er rod on a TFO TiCr 9ft 4pc 10wt blank and tried it out today on a soccer field (no open water yet up this way). Put on a RIO Pike WF 10 F and a 2/0 Dahlberg Diver and and had a few casts. The rod can really power a big, air resistant fly out there.

I would recommend the TFO TiCr. The price for a factory rod is going to be somewhere in the mid-$300's.

I have the fly line on a Teton Tioga, but I will be getting a new large arbor reel to go with this rod. Someone may give a better recommendation for a reel than me, so I leave that one open to suggestions.

we were ice fishing down towards the brooks area, and I walked over to TFG's tent to BS for a while, and walked back towards my tent, to find my rod holder tipped over, and no rod. About 20 minutes earlier we had pranked someone - well - wayne had - by setting off a tip up, so I though... wayne or jeff have to have my rod somewhere... but sure enough, they didn't... The rod that ORV was so nice in donating to me, was taken by the fishing gods.

I was a little hesitant to believe this, until wayne actually got his camera out and drilled about 15 holes to check if it was around... long gone. but my bell was at the bottom, and marks the grave of my beloved 1st ice rod. RIP old yeller.

I than proceeded to catch a 5lb pike out of the same hole, with a tip up... no going down the hole with that one!
