Default Gotta share with you

In mid April I had a friend of my daughter reach out for some help in Gr 12 math, her average was in the low 20s and she had essentially checked out (COVID and a sick parent did not help the situation).

For the next 2 months, 90 mins a day, every day (think she missed like 2 sessions) we ground math with the goal of a pass. Just got her finalized grade, passed in the mid 60s...truly unimaginable given her starting point. She now can apply to any post secondary and stands a good chance of getting in.

Some students need extra support...it's out there.

I recall the story of another student I worked with, gonna fail Gr 12 math, chem and physics all at once...she now has a B.Sc and works as a nurse in a severe brain injury unit, helping folks that really need it.

Super proud of the achievements of these kids, I only added the oil, the machine ran by itself.

There no better view then looking at yourself in the mirror and getting a good feeling inside ,mirrors don't Bs anyone.

So many folks can't even walk by a mirror for the kinda of life they have lived.

Great story and the gift you give to better an others life is the greatest gift of all.

When I read stories like this it still gives me great hope that there's still some folks who care. We need to hear more stuff like this on AO.

All The Best

That was very kind of you. That was a great achievement because these are the ones that go unacknowledged. Cheers.

Good job to you, Dad. It's no small feat when you can get them to focus enough to bring up marks like you have done with your Daughter.
Different time we are in. My parents did not lend a hand in any of my studies right from grade 1-12, that I recall.

Cudos to you sir.

Really good of you to help her out. The large number of kids that need tutoring in math, Chem and Physics demonstrates to me that the schools are doing a very poor job of teaching these subjects. Most kids can learn it well if taught properly, the fact so many of these completely competent kids can't learn it in school I find disturbing. The world is becoming ever more technical, good jobs are only there for the kids with the right education and learning. Even most trades take a pile of math skills.

Good on you for helping this kid have a WAY brighter future.

it is truly amazing when a mentor steps into someone's life at that perfect moment and then opens a lifetime of doors for that person.

I had someone help me out at a young age when I entered the workforce. 40 years later I end up standing on his doorstep thanking him for making the difference in a troubled youth.

Dodger.

There is a scary amount of this stuff going on. In many cases I see rudimentary skills lacking and often a result of kicking the issue from one grade to the next (can't let jr fail). It's amazing, the number of kids I meet suffering because they can't multiply, don't know what a fraction means or can't add negative numbers. These missing skills make more complex tasks impossible. The lack of focus on these gaps in grade 2, 3 or 4 make huge problems in later grades. I recall a grade 6 kid who couldn't multiply, when we drafted a times table he looked at it like a Ouija board, not sure what it did. Mom was concerned he might get dependant on it...that was the point, he'll use it until he doesn't need it. 2 years later he was on the Honour Roll.

It feels especially good when done for free.

Please, keep up the good work. We are short of skilled mentors.
Let’s also give credit where due. Young people who want to learn are our future, and we all know that those who strive to help themselves, are the best students.

Sometimes all people need is someone to believe in them and a gentle positive nudge.

And parents need to be part of this mixture for their child’s success....reach out for assistance if they can’t help their child....their success doesn’t solely fall on the teachers/school systems etc.....prime example was my son was doing the craps....the teacher etc was great but the two of them didn’t click so my son tuned him out....that didn’t last long after a conversation took place turned it around to 90’s....

Good on those that mentor people at achieving their goals.

Good on you. There is a huge need for this as the system is letting these kids down. The system being the education system, to politicians, to parents. Granted that some of these kids have a legitimate tough time, but I see a lot of laziness in there as well. Mixed in with different people learn in a different fashion. Sometimes all they need is that approach from the other side and it's all clear for them. Politicians mandating that no one fails because it costs to much much to put a kid back in school for proper development. And we've seen it time and again, a teacher can't handle a kid, or a kid is bored in class and the teacher doesn't have their attention so they are a problem child. And the parents who think their children are angels and would never do what the school they did and start yelling at the school rather than give their kids the discipline and/or help they need.

Good on you for this. You'd be surprised how many 3rd, 4th year, and even Journeyman that I have to teach fractions. I don't know how they've made it as far as they have without fractions, but they have.

What you are doing is much needed in society today, and I thank you for it.
