Fly Tying
So my father of 78 finally decided to give me his arsenal fly tying gear. I have not tried it in nearly 30 years and am definitely ready to get into it. Any tips? Online courses? Books? Tutorials? I think all the videos Dad has are vhs, hah.
Feedback apreciated.

Get an on-line subscription to Sport Fishing On The Fly (SFOTF) and 24/7 access to over 100 of their shows, along with a ton of fly-tying videos. It'll show you where to fish (mainly interior BC), how to fish, what to use and how to tie it. Great value!

Would definitely recommend a club. Cheap to join and then most will teach you. Much cheaper than a course for a couple hundred $ at a fly shop.

A YouTube channel that's great for those wanting to learn is called in the riffle, the norvise tying videos are good too, caddis fly angling shop, tight line video are good channels and if you want to watch an artistic master crafting museum quality flies that look to good to fish check out Dimitri Tseliaritskis channel...he's Russian but his videos are very easy to understand.

Reuben Martin flies is another cool channel.

Yup, YouTube is simply an awesome resource. A couple of the other good channels in addition to the ones mentioned are Tim Cammisa & Jim Misuiura. Another vote for Tightline Productions as well... Tim Flagler has a great way of explaining things for the novice like myself, and gives lots of little tips along the way. He recently did a one minute tips series for Orvis, which is a great start.
There is definitely something to be said for watching things first hand though. I spent several Mondays evenings over the winter getting together to tie with a group of folks at the church I attend. Among those present was a fellow who has been tying for over 40 years, so I learned a thing or two there from our guru. Also, I'd be remiss to not give props to Murray and SilverDoc, who got me interested in tying by showing my young son how to tie a woolly bugger at the Expo a few years ago.

As mentioned intheriffle, tight lines, jim misuria are all great.
Davie McPhail is a beautiful tier, but many patterns are more difficult than those mentioned above.

For a flavour if what is tied and used in Alberta, head to the Northern Lights Fly Tying Club home page: http://www.nlft.org
Part way down the left side links is their Yourube video channel. Good stuff there from local folks and some videos of folks like Brian Chan and Phil Rowley.
Regards,
Don
