Some lovely ties there. That deer hair would float through a hurricane. Nicely done.

For grayling I found the toms thumb to be much quicker to tie but just as effective; seeing as they will wreck either pattern in short order, I go with the easier one especially when tying a bunch.
Beautiful work. Those parachutes are perfect.

Hey thanx , yep i agree the tom thumb would be a much more practical pattetn to use for grayling , i guess im a a bit of a snob because i only use flies that i think look cool and are not the easiest to tie haha

Whoa,,, don't be so hard on the Irresistible,,, Tied in in smaller sizes (16- 20), it has fooled many a large trout on some of our toughest spring creeks and the Bow.
BTW, very nice ties,,, fly tying is all about proportion which you have nailed perfectly,,, good job!!!

Those look great to me. Looks like you are using a "crown" style vise. I'm looking to buy my first. IF starting from scratch, would you recommend spending the extra $ to get a full rotating vise? Thanks.

I have the same vice as shown in the pictures (unless it is a regal) and I would not recommend the straight across jaws. When tilted up like the pictures they are not bad but the vices that have a V-shape to them are much better if you can find/afford them. They give your hand a lot more room sit in when tying. That being said mine is fine for everything that i do (smallest I will tie is size 16 nymphs).
As to the rotary portion of your question, i would definitely recommend it. A vice is like most things in fly fishing and you definitely get what you pay for (stronger jaws, last longer etc.) and the rotary function makes a world of a difference.

Yep i agree this vice is pretty inexpensive and is not a full rotary . It worked great when it was brand new there are grooves which hold the larger stresmer hooks and they still work great but the front flat part of jaws has lost its grip ovet time when tying with smaller hooks so i am actually in the market for a new vice my self and as cheif said you get what you for so this time im going to spend some decent money in hopes of a long lasting vice. That being said if your not 100% sure you are going to stick with fly tying starting out with a cheaper vice might be a good idea but eventually if you stick it out you will need a quality vice.

How many times do you people need to be told that it's a vise, not a friging vice, unless of course you have a vice or two?

Yeah, I thought he was wrong too. But the Cambridge dictionary shows vise and vice both describing a tool that holds things. "Vice" of course has additional meanings.

Vise vs vice...I give up, there's no hope for some people
Anyway, really nice ties Dragless. My eyes, except for protecting the English language, are too worn out to tie small dries anymore.

I agree wholeheartedly with Mr Flyguy. I'm thinking enough people have butchered the spelling/use, that a change was made. Vise. Period.

Mr Flyguy, re: vice/vise usage
Toss them in the pile of those that also use "they're/their" and "your/you're" incorrectly.

no. They're/their and your/you're have nothing to do with source country. Mistakes are simply bad grammar. This is really more like color/colour.

Sorry dude, different thing. They're and their and there are all different and not synonymous. And you're and your are completely different as well.
Think of word spellings like grey and gray, colour and color, check and cheque (like the monetary device).

"A*vise*(American spelling; British English:*vice)"
I'm not a doctor or anything but if Britain is older than America then it would stand to reason that their version of the word was first. So if you were actually all about preserving the English language then you would be getting after the people using the American version.
But this feels like beating a dead horse at this point.
So to each their own. This post started with someone great ties and should get back to that.

Nope, having been born in England I think I have more smarts that that.
However, agree that we are digressing from the thread, so let's concede that I am right and get back to fly tying again
