fly Rod opinions - Sage Flight
(initially posted this in the fishing forum - before I realized there was a fly fishing forum!)
Getting back into fishing after a long hiatus. Have been doing much spin rod fishing lately but want to get back into fly.
Looking at a used Sage flight 8ft 4 Wt.
Soliciting opinions on this being good rod for southern Alberta?
Will be mainly using it on bow and some mountain lakes in K country Banff area.
They are asking $180.
Opinions please.

A 9' 5 or 6 wt. may be a little better suited to the water in the area especially if it is your only rod to start. As far as the flight I have no experience with it but all the Sage gear I have used has worked well.

I like my flight a lot and I wouldn't hesitate to pick that up if I was looking for a dry fly rod. Decent performance but it's a bit heavier than the current rods at that price point.
A six weight makes a better Streamer and nymph fishing on the Bow though.

For mtn lakes a 9' 4 wt or 5 wt would be better.

I fish an 8'6" medium action 4wt on mountain lakes and have no problems. If you wanna throw heavy streamers in the bow you may want a 5wt, but a 4 is just fine.

I would go with a 6 wt. It will have the backbone to cast larger flies in the windy conditions you get down there. Without it, you can sometimes develop bad casting habits trying to get more power on your forward stroke. It's a great all purpose line weight. Maybe later you could get a 4 wt for more specialized fishing.
I wouldn't focus in manufacturer. Most companies make nice rods these days.
Cast a few before buying to see what suits you best.

I'm sure that rod would be fine for just about anything here. I have a 7'6" 3wt that I can throw streamers like circus peanuts with and cast indicator rigs with as well. No reason that a 8' 4wt couldn't do it all either

I am beginning to see a bit of a pattern here.

I agree with the 6wt, the 3 and 4's might be okay for some mountain lakes and small streams, but definitely not going to be great on the Bow when your casting into a 20-30k wind and then hook into a 20"+ trout in a 3-5 mile current.

This thread is 2 years old, I just bumped it up because the OP is asking a similar question about 4wts this year a couple of threads down.

I own a 8'6" 5wt Flight. Never use it. It's a very fast rod which requires a lot of line to be out to load. I generally fish small streams. It is great for firing long distance dries. I bought some Rio Grand to see how it will respond to a heavier line. Yet to try it. I've only used it less than 10 times. I'd sell it to you if your interested.

I fish the same 4wt flight from time to time, it's a decent stick definitely doesn't compare the other sage models like the one or z-axis but as far as other 8ft 4wt made by other companies in the same price range I'd buy the flight... i find it works best with a line that has a shorter shooting head makes it easier to get the road loaded quickly cuz you'll typically be making shorter casts with it. Hope that helps you out!

Save your cash, pick up a TFO NXT or an Echo Base. Both can be had new for under a $100. Buy a 4wt and a 6wt for $200.

Yea
Did not end up getting the used Sage Flight
Also did not end up getting back into fly fishing as I had planned.
Planning on returning it to it this year - hopefully will happen this time
So now looking at a Sage One - same weight but new and on sale
While I certainly thank you for your keen interest in me and my post history - I am Wondering why this is seems to be an issue to you and of concern enough to troll through my post history two years back and the to point this out.....to what end?

Thanks for this
These rods get great reviews for their price point - A Sage One may be overkill for my commitment at this point.

Don't flatter yourself, I was doing a search on Sage 4wt rods as I just picked up a Sage One 4wt on closeout.
