I wonder if it has anything to do with the AFGA noticing that the resident moose allocation numbers were severely cut for WMU 349 this year but outfitter allocations rose substantially for that zone this year?
Sounds like the government had to do some backpedaling to increase the resident 349 moose tags closer to 2020 tag numbers.
I’m wondering if this was also the case with the mule deer draw and the government was worried about the resident hunter backlash?
Almost a month late is ridiculous IMO…..

Huge joke, an embarrassment, this is why we need our draws earlier so if the gov pulls **** like this it doesn’t affect scouting by pushing draw dates till a couple weeks before season

My guess is they are going to let loose and "Nuke" the herd as packhunter would say...

This is ridiculous. People apply with the idea they'll know by July 14th and can make plans, scout, gain permission, plan their holidays. Jesus, this is an embarrassment.

That's the draw I'm waiting for. Telling you a week before the results, that you have to wait another month is ridiculous.

Figured something was off when draw Quota’s weren’t shown when applications were being done. I got a hunch we are going to see some huge tag numbers given out this year

I agree that they are going to nuke the herds in response the CWD. Because that worked so well before.

What a gong show. No secret on how to screw up a simple process. Let the government manage it.

My guess is it has to do with CWD. Maybe they found more than they thought

Had I known they were increasing the quota I would have applied, so silly they don’t even publish quotas for a species before the drawing process, really affects strategy.

This was actually consistent with the draw in 2020 where for whatever reason they do not include the quota for mule deer. Not sure the reason?

But have to agree with everyone else in that this is a complete joke. I put in for a mule deer draw that I should get, but no guarantee in a high priority zone... and now have to wait an additional month to find out.

My guess is they want to get the outfitters back on their feet with covid restrictions easing, so will be giving higher allocations to the outfitter and to make it "fair" will need to increase resident hunting tags. So likely instead of a nice quiet hunt with limited tags will probably be battling the hunting crowd. Sure hope I am wrong

DR

From an outfitters mouth in wmu 208, “ they will be receiving additional mule deer tags they can use over the next few yrs. so whatever deer didnt get shot last 2 yrs can get shot on top of the ones allotted for same time frame”.

As someone just building priority I sure hope that there is not going to be a “ nuke the herd” management plan put in place

Building priority to hunt spikes and fork horns doesn’t sound worthwhile when you would be traveling to hunt mule deer

Looks like some substantial outfitter allocation increases for some animals/WMU’s this fall; see below for Elk, Moose, WT and Sheep.
I have a feeling residents will be losing many draw tags again so these outfitter allocations could be increased. Interesting that Mule deer outfitter allocations for this fall were not available yet…..
If this is the reason that all Alberta resident Mule Deer hunters have to wait until August 12th for their results, there is going to be some backlash IMO...

As someone who can pull a MD tag anywhere and was waiting for his kid to catch up so we can chase them together, am feeling like Murphy will have got me again on a coveted draw if they do go ahead and increase tags. I am worried any chance at a nice one will be gone after they "nuke" the herds with extra tags.

I guess time will tell soon enough.

Outfitters are hurting I get that, but increasing outfitter quotas at the cost of resident hunter quotas goes directly against what game managers in the province are supposed to stand for

That's what I'm seeing too, unbelievable for zone 418 elk with that high of draw wait times for resident hunters.

Another eye opener I saw for moose was the change from 2020 to 2021 tags for residents and outfitters in 349. Resident tags way down and outfitter allocations up.......

Take a look at the above tables for your draw species/zones everyone so you have an idea what to expect next week for draws when they come out(minus mule deer of course).
I'd be curious to see this info for antelope as well, if anyone knows where to find it please post it, thanks.

Everyone should be taking a look at those numbers. A brief look over the moose numbers and I can see what a lot of zones take so long to get drawn, the allocations are way over the 10% number we are fed. I wish I could say I was surprised that the common working man was getting screwed but I am not. It’s absolutely disgusting to be honest.

Don’t forget the unregulated hunters can just go in anytime they please and take a bunch of animals. Will have an impact on draw times for the common folk in the future. The new Métis rules don’t help either.
