Due to a US Canada tax treaty, matthews will be taxed about 15% on his signing bonuses, the majority of his contract. And taxed the normal 53% on the 3.5 mill of salary. Very good contract for Matthews.

IMO the league increases the cap when they don't have the revenues to justify it.
I've often wondered why the league doesn't cut the cap in half. Is McDavid going to quit, because $6M/year isn't enough, and become an accountant, welder, engineer, electrician? I doubt it. It just has to be high enough to attract the best from Europe and Russian, and where it's at now, is more than enough (for reference, the 10th highest paid player in the KHL in 2016 was Danis Zaripov, who was receiving $1.5M/year).

Because the players want their pound of flesh. The players will not play. The NHLPA is a force to be reckoned with. The owners managed a salary cap out of them and things have gone fairly smoothly since. The "escrow" thing is a slight bump that will hopefully be taken care. I hate that the NHLPA has so much power but those are the cards the owners must play.

I expect it would take some persuasion.

I wasn't suggesting giving them an option. Unless someone was going to start a new league.

The cap hit is still $11.67 as all money paid towards the player counts as salary cap so the rich teams aren't offering players a huge bonus and then $700k in salary and saying their cap hit is only $700k. The reason the players want the bonus, presumably, is they get the money sooner and the signing bonus isn't affect by a work stoppage, whereas the salary is.

They should just give their opposition a 1 goal lead on the score board.

For the life of me I don’t know why Dustin Schwartz has a job with the Oilers.

Get an NHL caliber goal tending coach already.

Why the fudge does this guy still coach?

The floater has 31 goals and 2 more points for floating tonight with 40 more minutes to float.

Schwartz must have some compromising pictures of Katz to still have his job. All of the coaches from 3 yrs back have been CANNED and he still has a job?? Unfathomable

Wow. Can't believe they called that a good goal. Terrible call....awful. I don't even know how that was a question. NHL officiating is brutal.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a NHL team quit or be as unmotivated as this.
