Work and looking after aging relatives ends a hunt before it gets started.

Legal time or a successful hunt are my two. I agree with the animals not being too spooked by shots. I've had a moose check me and my downed deer out within minutes of shooting. I've also hat two occasions where I shot an animal and had a second one come out and try to fight the dead one on the ground. One was a whitetail buck and one was a bull moose. Both were within 15 minutes of shooting.

Ok I have read what you have posted.
Do you think that was done on purpose or for a reason?

I only posted and asked because I have gained knowledge from me not understanding.

constant wet slushy rain or having an animal down ends it for the day for me. Most weather i can deal with but wet slush chills me to the bone after a few hours and can ice everything up if it's not covered

I think you should always hunt until last light. me and my hunting partner live by the "3 A's" rule. the 3 A's stands for Anytime, Anywhere, Anytime. meaning whatever animal you are hunting can appear in front of you at Anytime, Anywhere, Anytime lol. it started as a joke one day when a buck appeared directly below us in the bottom of a coulee we had been glassing for about 2 hours. we were just about to leave when my partner noticed this buck had just stood up out of his bed. i quickly proned out and filled my tag. from that day on we have lived by the 3 A's
if a hunt gets "spoiled" for whatever reason we cite the 3 A's and keep hunting. many stories on this thread are perfect examples of the 3 A's

Mine was a Winchester...wouldn't even use it as a boat anchor!

Yes, weapon malfunction has definitely ended a few hunts for me as well. Weather in the backcountry will also test my limits, so we've gotten better at being ready for, even expecting the worst. There's a considerable advantage to be had if a guy can stay on the mountain in inclement weather.

Great responses.

I had many people drive through a field I hiked into and shot good sized bucks 30 min later a couple times.
Also a guy I know accidently discharged his rifle and had a bull elk come in 25 min later (no calling or rut activity).

Animals can care less sometimes .....I would rather wait and find out than pack up early.

Mine ended early last night. When a cougar came into my stand at 30 yards and hissed and made a scene about half hour before dark. I did not stick around until full dark to see how far it had traveled away from me.
