Never heard of a Lion Fish, invasive as in introduced?

Is there a chance or ricochet shooting that close to the ocean floor and such?

Bullets don't travel far underwater, best measured in feet, not yards. There would be very little concern of a ricochet.

Not sure how swimming right up to a creature and shooting it at a range of two inches qualifies as fun. That said, if lion fish are a huge problem, I'm fine with the practice. Don't really care. Just don't see myself ever doing it.

Massive problem. Introduced by aquarium dumping. And getting worse by the year, they have found them at depths and temps thought not to support lion fish. No natural predators on this side of the world, they are very aggressive and eat everything. Especially hard on fish fry.

Florida has spear fishing tournaments for them. Apparently you put them in ice water to kill, then use pliers and Kevlar gloves to carefully remove the spines. The flesh is said to be white, mild and delicious.

If you have ever been spear fishing you would know how fun it is.

I've been diving the yucatan for years, and they are a huge problem. Any chance to spearfish them is a good thing.

I find spearfishing a little tricky when you're dealing with currents and trying to avoid touching/hitting coral and get a shot at a lionfish that is tucked in under a rock shelf.

Good eating though!

True, I've never spear fished. But if spearfishing involves swimming right up to a fish that just sits there and you shoot it at point blank range (like in the shooting video), I probably wouldn't enjoy it. That's just me. I suspect it may be more challenging/difficult than that however, so I'm definitely not making any comment or criticism of spearfishing..

Try it in scuba gear with a current.

Apparently the Caymans have done a really good job with their culling. I personally would love to do a day of diving, spearing and eating lion fish. Next time I'm down in the carribean I'll find a dive shop that does it

Oh I'm in! Though I worry that the frigid Lake Minnewanka water will expose my shortcomings!

If you head to Playa Del Carmen - talk to Dave at The Abyss Dive Shop.

They're my go-to shop there.

I'm headed there in a few months and will definitely be trying to line this up for a couple dives. Looks like fun to me

Default Underwater hunting

I'd do this if I could swim! It looks like a hoot, much like shooting gophers only I don't eat gophers so there's actually more to be said for the fishing. Who wouldn want to try something new like this?

If you were a diver and saw
what lion fish were doing to the Caribbean reefs you would be doing anything you could to eliminate them, whether it was sporting or not.
