Default White Elk

that white bear thread reminded me of a white elk.

you know when you drive south of lacombe on hwy 2, and before Blackfalds, there is a elk farm on the left (east)? I noticed yesterday, there is a almost pure white elk in thier fencing. this a genetic defect from in-breeding or something in thier case? or just one of those miracles?

Default White Elk

Seen some on an elk farm along HWY 64 north of Hines Creek near Eureka River.

I seen a albino whitetail buck a few years back, it wasnt very big but my fiance at the time wanted to shoot it.

White elk are a just a color phase. They are not albino's just white elk.

I did some googling and here is a little explanation of white elk. http://www.silvertine.ca/whiteelk.html

There is a fellow near Millet with a whole heard of white bull elk. Pretty neat looking. He paid big bucks for these things.

that picture on the webpage pretty much sums it up. pretty crazy. Id drop the hammer on a white elk if i ever saw one in the woods. Come to think of it, i remember seeing a white elk waaaaaaaaay back by Redwater, after you pass it, another elk farm after the dip on the left. and here i thought it was rare

I just got back from Ontario and in their Hunting regulations, white or whitish looking moose are protected. Don't think that's the case here, moose or elk.

Here is a pic i took last year in Northern Alberta.

I think this elk was an albino as it had pink eyes and nose.

A field near my house had many deer feeding in it this past Fall. One of them in particular, was a mostly white (with brown patches) Doe. With her she had one completely white fawn, and this fawns twin, a perfectly normal whitetail fawn.

Saw them in the same spot nearly every night I went out, and even considered shooting one of them when the antlerless season started... Never got around to it though. My girlfiend swore it would be un-lucky, but I think she became attached to them.

I researched it and found out they are called Piebald deer:

"A genetic variation (defect) produces the piebald condition in white-tailed deer, not parasites or diseases. Piebald deer are colored white and brown similar to a pinto pony. Sometimes they appear almost entirely white. In addition to this coloration, many have some of the following observable conditions: bowing of the nose (Roman nose); short legs; arching spine (scoliosis); short lower jaws. This genetic condition is rare with typically less than one percent of white-tailed deer being affected."

do you think the meat of a white animal would taste different from a normal brown elk?
