Default Microchipping Dogs,,it works!!!

Had a Litter of pups back last April had them microchipped , three of the Pups went to the USA, got a call from one of the owners saying she felt her dog was stolen, I told her to call the microchip company and see if the dog had been taken somewhere, before she could call, they called her, and told her where her best buddy was. Today I got a call to tell me where the pup was....I was impressed

Glad it worked out. Tattoo's and microchips are insurance and in my mind worth the investment.

A related story:

A friends dog got of the yard in Hinton she had no collar on or visible ID and disappeared. As she had won a best of breed she was valued and the breeder started a heavy social media search. Turns out she had wandered a ways out of the town following the road. She was picked up by a long haul truck driver headed east. He took her to his home in Ontario and his wife insisted they take the dog to a vet for a check. The microchip showed up and the dog got sent back home.

My limited understanding on microchips is that the only issues are if the dog is chipped in another country you need to get it put on the registry here (Pet ID) which there is a fee for and that not all vet's carry a microchip reader (most do but not all).

And just a reminder, if you change your phone number, let the company that you registered the microchip with know. They'll just try calling the number you originally gave them, which may no longer work.

As well, it costs 10 to 15 bucks to have a dog tag done up with your phone number on it. Really could save someone alot of hassle if they can pick up the phone and say they have your dog.

Default They do work

My pup was being looked after by a friend while I was fishing in northern PQ.

She let him out, without his collar and he headed towards home.

RCMP picked in up on the medium of the QE 2 !

Microchip was checked at the local pet store, he went to dog jail, and I got a call to come get him when I got back.

Smile Every dog we sell has one.

It is the best solution so far to discourage theft. The first time a dog goes to a vet the dog will be correctly identified, and ideally the thieves caught.

Vets don't just scan dogs? Ex's dog went to 5 vets trying to get a diagnosis, none of them scanned him. Current pup is due for a check up, highly doubt they'll do it either.

Phone number and address.

Our Brittany, Pee-J escaped on the one day that my cell phone had died. The guy that picked up my dog tried calling, gave up, drove to our house, and put Pee-J in our yard and made sure the gates were closed.

He left a message on our landline telling us what had happened. Had he not left the message we would have had no idea that Pee-J went on an adventure.

Our vet scans my dog every time he has his annual check up, just to make sure the chip hasn't migrated to a different part of the body.

My dog has 2 (one for Europe) both are almost impossible to read unless you know they are there and really look for them. Not a 100% solution

Smile We have had dogs returned to their owners

I suppose it matters how common dog thefts are, in your vets practice. The dogs that were returned were "lost" covered in mud and very hungry and found by good Samaritans and we actively looking for an owner.

After that it was easy.
